Porsche Sport Exhaust / Button Retrofit?
Porsche Sport Exhaust / Button Retrofit?
I have a 2002 with the PSE and from my limited research there seems to be a baffle that opens up depending on RPM or Speed or both. I know later cars had a button to just enable or disable the exhaust. Is there a "hack" to retrofit the button somehow.
Love the exhaust, but I kind of want it loud more often than not.
Thanks in advance for any insight.

I thought all PSE had the button. I had posed this question before..
I have some MY and car, and my PSE I swear sounds NOTHING Like any PSE i've heard and on vids...its much louder, hollow, and throatier...and I dont have a button..LOL I didnt care if it was or not when I bought cause it sounds awesome!

I agree. My PSE is very deep and throaty. So far I like the sound much better than any of the aftermarket exhausts I've heard. I drove an 04 with PSE and I really could not hear the difference after pushing the button. They must have mellowed the sound.
The default mode on the 996 PSE is the loud position. The switch allows you to put into the quiet mode full time. There is also a speed related switch to quiet mode from 25mph to 45 mph (as I remember) that is controlled by a wire to the speedo cluster. These all depend on the installation of the vacuum cut over in the engine compartment.
If you don't have the switch you probably don't have the vacuum cut over so the PSE does not go quiet at the specified speeds. You will definitely hear the difference if you have it. If you have a switch and you don't hear the difference then you probably have a problem with the wires or the vacuum lines.
When I installed my PSE I did install a switch and vacuum cut over, but did not install the speedo wire so I have the choice of full time loud or full time quiet.

If you dont have a switch on the dash, it may have been installed afterwards and the owner opted not to have the switch installed and the vacume component hooked up.
If the vacume component is hooked up and the valves open/close according to speed you can easily dissable the vacume by unpluging the orange connector located on the right side of the engine bay. This will allow the car to always be in loud mode regardless of what speed your at.
Do a search and you will see the diagram pointing out which connector to unplug.
Yes PSE sounds so good, this should be standard equipment on all Porsches.

I have my PSEs in default full open mode. It sounds really great and the higher the revs, the better it sounds. No droning at all. However, there are times that I am in a situation where I would like the car to be a bit more quiet, even though not necessary, which would lead to what Dharn had done below.
Dharn, the person who I bought my PSEs from still have the vacuum units and I know the switch can be bought from Suncoast. Would you have any link to the DIY to re-install the vacuum units with the use of the switch? I like what you did, as stated above, there are times I need the car to be quiet. Thanks!
