extended warranty
extended warranty
I am looking into getting an extended warranty for the 03 996. Does any one has any recommendation as to which provider offers the best price and coverage? (Mercury, ezcare, fidelity....)
The 996 that I am picking up has 37,000 miles on it, is the warranty necessary?
Any owner here with 02+ 996 has any major issues with the engine?
I own BMW and MBs so I am not too worry about the regular maintenance, but just afraid of the $12K+ that I read to replace the engine.
Any advise?

I purchased my extended warranty from fidelity / audi for my 2004 996 w/ 33k miles.
In general, recommendations gleaned from the boards are:
1) Get a warranty that is exclusionary (names items it doesn't cover) and avoid warranties that only cover items they name.
2) Get a warranty from your local porsche shop since they will be fighting on your behalf for the claims.
3) Warranty companies make money. Only get a warranty if you cannot afford the worst case scenario.
Fidelity is reasonably priced. Fidelity also prorates the warranty if you terminate it early. Easy Care has recently gone up in cost and I believe is exclusionary.gl.
The amount of $ I spent on the warranty, I could have gotten the LNE IMS upgrade. I chose not to because this is my first porsche and I didn't know how many different things could go wrong besides the IMS. When my warranty runs out, and I need a new clutch, I will consider the LNE then.

Thanks for the info. May I asked how much you pay for your extended warranty? And did you get it through a Porsche dealer?
Thanks. My main concern is if the engine is going to fail? I have driven my SL500 daily, now with 81000 miles, and also a S320 with 170,000 miles since it was brand new (1996) without any problem.
I wonder if I can do the same to my 996 with only 37,000 on the engine? I like to babied my car, but also like to drive it. It won't just sit in the garage.
BTW, which bay area city are you in?
The only warranty that was cheaper was from CNA through another Porsche dealer, $2.5k for 36k/3yr. I chose Fidelity because the Porsche dealer was closer and very few reviews existed for CNA. gl.
I used to work for a company that sold warranties/extended service contracts so I learned a lot about them. I selected an EFG Tech's Choice Deluxe Plan, $100 deductible, A Rated carrier. In my zip code they allow $124 per hour for labor and the limit of liability for the policy is the NADA retail value of the car.
The coverage is very comprehensive 48 months/50K miles.
If you want a warranty look at EFG, I know they are good and pay the claims. PM me and I'll point you to the dude I used to work for.

I just called a local Porsche Dealer and he quoted me $5700 for 4 years 48000 miles. Another friend of mine told me that he can get me a "Bumper to Bumper" warranty for $34000, same 4 years 48000 miles, and this warranty can be used at a Porsche Dealership.
Does that sounds right?
Any feed back would be much appreciated.

I bought the EFG Tech Choice Deluxe plan from Dominic call him at 480-816-3411. I researched the heck out of it and decided for my car a '99 with 48k miles it was the best value for 48 months 50K miles and had the most comprehensive coverage. I called EFG and found out they allow $124 per hour labor rate and the limit of liability for the policy is equal to the NADA retail value for the car. That is a real plus. North Scottsdale Porsche told me they accept the warranty there and I'd have to pay $11 per hour because they charge $135 per hour, I can live with that and a $100 deductible. Do some research online. I have no connection to Dominic other than I used to work there. He sold me a good policy for a better price than I could find anywhere after I QUIT, I was very happy.

Thanks. I called but they don't cover California. But from what I am reading, $3400 for a 4 years 48000 miles warranty sounds like a good deal for a 7 years old car.
These types of warranties typically go on mileage, not on model year. If you are happy with $3400, and it will help you sleep better at night, you should go for it. You might break even in one repair.

That looks like a named component coverage as opposed to a exclusionary coverage. I didn't see IMS, RMS, AOS, etc in those named components. good luck.
I don't need luck, I did my due diligence before I purchased.

Correct! I called EFG and put a claim adjuster on a 3 way call with a service advisor at Porsche North Scottsdale. The service advisor explained what the IMS shaft is and how an IMS bearing is sealed on 99's through 01's and what happens if the bearing fails. The adjuster reassured me it would be covered as well as the rear main seal. When the adjuster dropped off the call the Service writer told me that he has processed a lot pf claims to EFG and that they are a really good warranty company.
