bad ignition switch, wiggle it and gently persuade it to get in there, it should and then you probably won't be able to get it out. Very common problem on these cars, I beleive the replacement is actually an audi part that can be had on ebay very cheap. you may also have no headlights or other electrical gremlins while it's malfunctioning so be careful. The DIY is there if you search.

try pushing it in & wiggle it a bit..it'll eventually go in...same thing if your're trying to pull it out...you will need to replace the ignition switch..
If you're mechanically incline, the parts are cheap like $12-$15(ebay) & DIY are easy peasy...here'a a link for DIY

It's say for boxster, but they're the same parts..

Is there an ignition switch bug going on...there sure is alot of post about this..maybe we should start a thread specifically for this.

Yup - That was my problem. A/C went out, then the keyfobs went out and I had a hard time getting the key in and out. I used WD40 on the key for a few days which certainly helped. Finnaly sucked it up and replaced the ignition switch at dealership for around 750. Hopefully you can DIY as posted by others for A LOT less.

If anyone in brooklyn NY wants to take me under their wing and teach me how to do some of the mods myself (change stock radio for navi screen, replace steering wheel and shifter and change the interior trims) - I will stock your home with the rest of the summer's supply of beer!
