997 or wait for 998?
I was seriously thinking about a 997....I like them more and more. Then the salesman told me the 998 will be here in a few years which will be a completely ne design, not a facelift with new engine options, (flat 8?) So what would you do? I think my trusty 996 will be with me for a few more years...
i think you should
My Porsche sources say the 997(2005-2007) update will only apply to the non-turbo models. The Turbos will remain on the 996 platform.
Then after a couple years they will come out on the 998 platform (2007-2008). The lights on the 998 will be almost identical to the Carrera GT lights, while the 997 will have retro look lights. Engine wise, the 997 will have a few more horses, but the 998 will have Cayenne derived v8 engines tunes to 400hp stock and 500hp in turbo form. The interior on the 997 is derived from the cayenne and will continue unchanged on the 998.
The double clutch gearbox will be available on the 997 and 998. 19 inch wheels will be available on 997 with 18 inch as standard. Also the 997/998 are going to have more standard features than present.
Prices are expected to be almost the same. However the 998 v8 will be significantly more. Also the "big heads†at Porsche have not yet decided whether to only have the flat 6 on the Boxster and have the Carrera only run the V8, or have the Carrera running the V8 and flat 6 stretched to clost to 4.0L.
Thats what I know for sure, more to come…
997 Update!
Seems like this is the suspected timing:
2004 late: C2 and C2S Coupe
2005: C2S Cab and C4S Coupe
2006: C4S Cab (400hp), GT3 and Turbo
2007: GT2
2008: 998

yellow, you're smokin' crack, bro.
Newport, get what you want now. Life's too short man. Enjoy it now.
If you really want a turbo, find a used 996 Turbo and have at it.
If you want the newest, freshest, first of the first, well, you might wait for the 997 Turbo.
Or wait just a week or two longer, and Porsche might even surprise you with something.

One thing for sure, your salesman knows nothing that we didn't hear first.
I don't see Porsche developing a flat-8 when they've got a v-8 lying around in NA and Turbo forms. It just costs a little company like that too much.
Why not drop the 'old' GT3 motor into the 998, and get a 3.x liter flat 6, with 380-400 hp? It fits, preserves the weight distribution and heritage of the 911, and they can throw the V8 in a front-engined M5-killer.

look at the time line, it speaks for itself.
read it, then speak. I did get those from a frined in Germany and that's the way it's going to be.

Sorry, no way in hell you can get a Cayenne derived V8 into a 911 body. Even if you could, you are looking at a 4000 lbs 911 with 80% of the weight in the rear.

Sorry yellowbmr and newport, but what drugs are you guys on? yellowbmr, you say there won't be a 997 turbo in your first post, then you post a spy shot of one. Make up your mind! And your first post is mostly old info about cars that are already in production, but you talk about them like they're not. Where did you copy and paste that from?
newport, a front or mid-engined V8 911? A sedan derivative 911? Huh? Those wouldn't be 911's!

Newport,
My experience has been that salesmen are the least informed of all people in the Porsche world, don't believe it unless you can see it and touch it. The 997/S has been in development for 5 years and will most likely stay in It's current form for some time.
If you like the car , go for it....
BMR,
Your posts are old news, we have heard it all before, and most of it is speculation. As usual you are a step behind everyone else.
