IMS Failure
Yes it's basically sitting on the shelf now. PM me if interested.
I say if it helps you sleep better at night do it. I think the reasoning is similiar to the same as why people do not eat brocolli all the time to prevent cancer, get regular colonoscopies, get 100/300 or more coverage, work out, etc.... you get the point.
I think getting an IMS retro fit is a no brainer. I plan on having it done in January by ROCS in NJ (LN preferred installer). I see the expense purely as a maintenance item for these vehicles, why wouldn't you pay ~$2K and give yourself the piece of mind that you are pro-actively avoiding a potential catastrophe ?
I think you're fine. At that price, I'm guessing you got a remanufactured engine which should have had all the updates necessary to avoid a repeat. Go back to warm and fuzzy.
OK, I have to ask now. What is with all the NJ folks on here? Nothing against NJ, but this feels like an NJ forum. What about London? California? Texas and those other places on the globe? Are all the Porsche cars in NJ? lol

Has anyone had their car done at ROCS in New Jersey ? Would love to know what you thought about the shop, the service, etc.

Short answer is no. Even the new bearing can fail but, in over 4,000 retrofits, only a handful have and most were caused by install error according to data from Flat 6 Innovations. Flat 6 and LN have developed the IMS Solution which is a permanent fix. Only available for the single row bearing though. They should be available early in 2013.
i'm going to be swapping out my newly aquired 996's engine with something of the lsx variety! all this talk of $12k-$20k engine swaps is insane! i can probably sell my stock used engine for $5k, that would buy a fully built/forged ls motor and fully reliable. I know the purists hate this idea, but these prices are crazy!
I just finished having my IMS Guardian installed.
Never had any evidence of failure to date I picked up my ride at 56k on the ODO I now have 61K. I always look for any oil leaks and had it all visuall inspected when I put in a new clutch so far so good.
Only thing with the IMS is the plug has a lower clearance now and since my car is lowered I need to keep it top of mind over speed bumps and parking butt first.
Its really just an early warning system either way be prepared to pay.

Agreed. If you're worried, there's a $2900 insurance policy against it. Otherwise, just drive the car.
If anyone is interested in a brand new IMS Guardian PM me. I have a new one for sale for $259 and it is listed here.
