2003 996 - double din install instructions
Correct - The 120ZBt has an internal amp that is good for about 45 watts per channel. It works and is comparable to the stock head unit, but the addition of another amp such as the PDX-5 brings the system to a whole new level. More like what you would expect in a $100K plus car.
wow - this is a little older...
did my install went with the Z-120BT and a JL Audio 5 channel amp. Also got the DDin kit from Loi.
came out real nice - took me a long time but that is because it was my first time. I could pull and put it in in an hour now if i had too!

I replaced my oriignal CDR-220 - since it was not working when I bought the car (worth to check the fuses first). I found a place in San Diego that would repair it for about $250 - but decided to install a Pioneer AVH-3200BT double DIN unit. If you have CDR-23 I think that is MOST - so to replace becomes a big job re-wiring everything, With the 220 I had a local installer do it - they used an off the shelf Metra(?) Audi/VW adapter to interface to the BOSE amp (which requires lower ohm inputs than most common receivers drive). The installer had done a Boxster before (same issue) and worked on a lot of Audi;s with Bose systems - so was familiar with what is needed. The factory CD changer will not interface to the new unit - but who cares - I now have iPOD interface, DVD (can store a lot of MP3;'s on a single disc) and even SD card slot. I think they used a standard double din kit and then fabricated a plastic surround (from ABS I think) to complete the trim (the Eurospeed kit is another option and maybe closer to the factory look - but I did not see that). System works great with the BOSE speakers - even though the BOSE AMP and Speakers are not the best sounding stuff on the market - replacing that system would cost a lot more and need a lot of rewiring. The unit is also upgradeable to navigation if I ever need that. The only thing I miss is no steering wheel controls that I am used to on my other cars. I even found instructions on-line how to upload a Porsche Wallpaper to the unit - so when it turns on it looks like a factory system ! My P-Car mechanic was impressed !
CD holder
Also - I removed the CD holder (since I perfer the open tray at the bottom of the console and moved the HVAC controls to the slot where the CD holders were - fits in there OK - and the stock wiring is long enough to move the unit. I think some people put the HVAC in the bottom slot and keep the CD holder). (not sure if you need to dremel the edges of the plastic if you do that?) . Another option is to move HVAC to the bottom and buy a tray for the slot above that (but again I think it is a different shape since the bottom slot is slightly curved at the bottom - and you may need to order the right option to do that).
How did you fit the HVAC-controls in the upper slot of the lower console? I was told it didn't fit there no matter what trim parts you got your hands on. I'd love to swap HVAC and the tray (yes, I know it's a different tray in the bottom slot):

(Also: I agree, the PDX-series from Alpine is really good!)

Pics of my double DIN (I'm going to change the Bezel out for the eurospeed one around the pioneer unit)

But a bit of cutting will fix that in a hurry. Now for the bezel, do you mind popping it off and checking the part number on the back? I also notice that the bezel sticks up higher than the sides and higher than it would with the navi-unit, cd-holder or upper tray in the top slot, but that's not a dealbreaker for me.

Interesting! The HVAC controls doesn't go into that hole without some cutting, it stops around here:
