2003 996 - double din install instructions

I'm trying to determine what all I need to install a DD head unit.

I have the stock cd/stereo now. My speaker covers say "bose" should I assume I have the bose MOST system?

if so does that mean along with the DD head unit i'll need a new amp? which amp? (where is it??)

what do i need to do to relocate the AC controls? do I need to buy a new trim piece? (right now i have the CD holders and empty tray in the bottom of the console - in the upper is the swing out cup holder, AC controls and head unit)

is there such a thing as a PNP wiring harness?

I'm looking at the AVIC Z120bt

suggestions?

thanks!

Mark

Check with Loi down in Fla. I think its eurospeed.com. He sells a kit which wil make it much easier, plus advice, plus instructions. I put in a Kenwood DNX 6960 and used an Alpine amp. 5 channel and it came out great, the amp sits on the little shelf in my trunk. Also, there is step by step instructions, on the Renntech site under Boxter. Do a search.

I bought a kit from euromotorspeed.com on EBay for around 200 bucks. I'm not sure if the hardware was worth it, but having Loi on the phone to tell you what to hook up was priceless. That guy just will not give up until everything is working properly. Thumbs up. He will be able to tell you if there is anything else you need to buy. Send him an email at sales@euromotorspeed.com.

thank you - i've looked at most of these and was trying to get it all into one thread.

I've also emailed Loi -- he is out of the kits at the moment. He wasn't clear on what needed to happen if i had the bose most system - the whole fiber optic to the amp piece -- that is what has me concerned.

I have a 2004 with the "most" system. In mine the "most" had to go away when I replaced the radio head and the amp (the most amp is hidden down near my spare tire). My installer said he would not want to do this without Loi's kit, which includes a new harness. I did not replace my speakers and am satisfied, but am sure it would be better with new speakers. I wound up using a Kenwood radio head and an Alpine 5 channel amp which fits in my trunk nicely. I purchased a 6 channel amp but it was far greater than my needs (2,000 amps) and took up to much space. The installer had to run wires from the radio to the amp in the trunk which by passed the fiber optics in the "most". Hope this helps.

My old radio head was the CDR23. If you have that one, I believe its a "most" system. But, I am not a gearhead and some others on this site may give you the assurance you need. With that, the only other difference if its not the most system is your installer can use the wiring already installed.

Most system will have two orange plastic fiber optic cables that will go from the head unit to the amp. The amp should be located in the front boot by the spare tire.
Use can also search for the Dension gateway 500 install and you will see pics of the orange plastic fiber cables.
The amp and the head unit ONLY communicate to one another through the fiber cables. So if you remove a most system you will have to run new wires through the firewall from the head unti to the amp.

I had the Bose( hi end) MOST system and upgraded to a Pioneer AVIC GPS unit. Had it done by an installer;used Loi's kit. Replaced the Bose amp with 2 Alpine amps and kept the speakers. Am pleased with the results. Loi talked to my installer and walked him throiugh the process...
BTW there is a lot of misinformation on this mod and in the end it can be done without yanking out wires or knocking out the Most.

Simply...consider the CDR23 and the original amp to be a pair. If you change either, you have to replace both. They talk to each othe via fiber optic cable which other systems don't use. The speakers are just speakers. Some people replace them, some don't.
