Prices not making any sense...all over the board..
So i've been shopping for the right porsche for the past 2 months now, started off with a 1999 around 16k budget, the next thing i know i'm looking only at 2002, 2003's upto 25k ..and ofcourse i have the IMS fear from the internet and thinking i have to spend another 2k to do it as soon as i get one..lol
What is driving me crazy is the prices...I've found a 2003 with 73k that looked clean in texas for $23,000 but within 2 days it was sold ofcourse, then found a 2002 with 68k and agreed on $20,000 and the next day when i woke up the car was sold before i could fly and buy it..
i dont get this, i'm seeing people asking $28000 for a 2002 porsche with 60-70k miles and over $30,000 for 2003's...and it seems some wont even budge..
If you look at ebay barley any cars are selling when you check completed listings.., same with cars.com, autotrader, ect.. and Craigslist people are listing over and over..
I've also noticed some porsche owners are really hostile when you ask about service, price reduction, even 2 so far refused to help with a PPI (which i would pay for)
Something has to give, this isn't exactly a porsche market, not for the 2002-2003's i dont think, first its not easy to finance such an old car or the interest rate is a bit high. so mostley it would be a cash deal & still sellers aren't taking that into account, People who can REALLY AFFORD a porsche i believe go for newer models....plus its almost 2011 and these cars values will take another hit..i dont get it!
too bad i didn't jump on that 2002 for $20,000 that same minute, i should have hopped on a plane that night and picked it up instead of waiting till the morning...not meant to be i guess...

Well...I think some of it comes down to the motivation level of the seller. Someone who just lost a job and needs to pay of some debt, or free up some capital for basic living will price to move. Someone who's looking at upgrading their toy will be prepared to wait for a while.
As you've noted, the 02/03s in the low 20s move in a matter of hours.

I sold mine for 22 last winter to buy an M3 and wish I hadn't. They are worth far more. You can't buy a decent 80s model for those prices and a 996 is twice the car, just more of them.
A decent '03 generally runs anywhere from $mid 20s (deperate seller w/PCar "issues") to $mid 30s (depending on miles and history).
IMHO, no righteous seller should balk at a PPI unless they know that you're going find something wrong.
Best owners with well-maintained cars will generally want all the money.
IMHO, smart buyers will want well-maintained cars from the best owners.
Just my 2-cents... deposited.
if they become hostile about a PPI or service records walk away.
most will try and hold there ground on price as they are already cheap compared to what most paid but just take your time if your serious ona car put down a depsit with a dealer or person through paypal so u can reverse it.
if they cant show service records i wouldn't bother or become hostile let em keep the car there are plenty around.

I'm shopping for a Porsche right now and the sellers with well maintained, clean, low mileage cars "stand their ground" from a price perspective. Willing to bend a little, but no big discounts, even if the buyer is serious.
Hey smshirk, I'm on the fence on an E46 M3 and 99'-01' 996. Would you mind a quick explanation why you regret selling your 996 for an E46?
Sorry TS not trying to tread jack but smshirk is the first person I've seen do what he's done.

The advise I have for you is be patient when shopping. That's the secret. You will find deals out there on great well maintained 996s. I agree that most of the well maintained low mileage cars have a premium. Some of them will sit in the market and some will go fast!
Also an E46 M3 is a totally different vehicle as mentioned by some of you guys here. Depends on what you are looking for and what will make you happy. Both super fun cars!

Also on the same boat. Have a 2002 986s, thinking about a 02-03 996 or e46 m3.
Any hints on where to shop online ? Been using craigslist so far, but there are mostly dealers.
Thanks
