I have always just touched the lug nuts. If the are HOT after normal driving you are starting to have issues. Warm is normal. I know it is not the correct way but it has never failed me.

I think he wants to check, not wait til it's almost gone and listen for sounds.

Jack the wheel up you want to check. Put one hand on 12 o'clock and the other at 6 o'clock. Rock her back and forth. Anything more than about 1/8th of an inch of play will mean your bearing is worn down and needs servicing.

He wants to check for wheel bearings, not ball joints.

You can just find a long empty stretch of road and do a fake slalom and this should be good enough to uncover any wheel bearing noises.

i think the wheel will feel wobbly if the bearing is bad. so, testing it this way should work. i never had a bearing issue so can't confirm but that's what i have heard
