Stereo/Speaker Advice Please

Hi All:
I've searched forums before posting this, but can't find answers to the following (also posted under 996TT but no answers):
  1. Have 2001 996 (pre POST) with single DIN radio--CR220 or whatever that is dying or dead. Looking for reasonable upgrade solution, not to spend $2-3G. Factory sound is just awful-muddy and no clarity.
  2. Have gleaned replacing speakers will make a big difference alone, and advice I'm getting is with components in front to place tweeters in door or pillar, and don't do anything with dash speakers (disconnect & don't replace). Anyone have on opinion on this?
  3. Want to add single woofer that doesn't need enclosure. Can I just go with 8-10"?
  4. I see Vivid Racing is promoting Diamond Audio M353 speaker packages, and that they are available from discounters for about $80 a pair. Are they decent speakers and will they make a big difference from factory? Thinking about S500A's for components & M353 for rears.
  5. I know head unit is very subjective, but I want something conservative looking without all the bling that resemebles the factory unit in look. Sony has pretty conservative look. Any suggestions? I know Alpine is big in this forum, but I personally don't care for the look.
  6. RE: amp, trying to avoid cost of 5 channel, and it's been suggested that a 4 channel can be wired to support a woofer in rear, as long as it isn't too demanding on power. Will this be OK?
Many thanks in advance, Fred
