I am trying to change the illumination color of a stock CDR-220 HU. I have it apart and think I have figured out how to change the color of the display. (There is an amber piece of film behind the LCD which can be swapped out or removed... same with the AC Control).

My question is... what is the color of the button and dial backlights on this unit? All the stock photos I find of the CDR-220 show it as amber like the display, but looking at the LEDs, it may be just white light. Also, does the illumination just come on when the lights are on?

BTW, I bought a used '01 cab a few months ago with an aftermarket HU and am changing back to stock. I have never seen the CDR-220 lit up in my car.

Anyway, just trying to avoid taking the faceplate apart too much. Each time I do it I seem to break a clip off.

I believe it's all amber, and it is illuminated when the lights are switched on.

 

Thanks... still can be done, just a little more difficult. They make translucent plastic stains which can change the illumination glow of the backlight optics.

Anyone experiment with changing the colored film?

 

I don't know about the CDR 220 but the LEDs in the climate control unit are amber, the amber/white film is only a diffuser.
