Question washing advice for convertible top

When washing a convertible, what does everyone do???

I usually wash the top with the same soap and wash mit and then dry with the Absorber (every other week). Most of the time I will not use soap on the top.

Dont wash with the soap. just rinse it with water, if their is a spot or a dirt spot, use a convertible top spray cleaner. I heard using the car soaps will deterioate the bond to repel water. Dry just with a micro towel.

I would spray it with water and run my hand over the top. Soap will ruin the water repellent.

Here is the process that I have been using for 20 years on canvas tops, and it has worked well for me.

Clean with Porsche convertible top soap. Wash by hand with a kitchen sink brush, (soft nylon bristle type). Gently scrub using the brush. Rinse with clean water from the hose.

Next, get the car in the shade so the water won't dry. Use a shop vacuum and suck off the water, and any soap and dirt residue. A towel can be used to blot up the water, but all towel will leave lint to some extent, even microfiber towels.

Twice a year, spray the top with Porsche top protectorant, or green can scotchguard.

Use a lint roller and a shop vacuum in between washings to get off the dirt.

Another product you should consider is Raggtopp. They make a cleaner and a protectant.

The Raggtopp product is the best. Use the cleaner and then the protectant. Its easy and when you are done, the top will bead up like a highly waxed car. You should also buy the lint-free cloth to push the water off the top when you wash it.

Yea I have the Porsche kit and they want you to use their wash for the top too. I have some lint on mine and it is hard to get off. I will try the shop vac method and report how that works.

For lints, I've used clear boxing tape. I get a piece about arms length... hold both ends so that they don't stick together (duh)... and dab the areas or even slowly (and lightly) gliding the tape on the canvas. Tape always seem to work well on clothing, so I figure what the heck...

Now I just spray with water and run my hand on it.

Use a lint roller to clean up lint and dust on tops. Lint roller does not leave any adhesive and doesn't pull on the canvass.
