cost to replace coolant expansion tank

Finally found out that my expansion tank needs to be replaced. Was quoted between $1500-$2000 for the repair.

should it be that much?

Replacing the reservoir appears to be a reasonably easy DIY job, explained here for a Mk1 996: http://www.renntech.org/forums/tutor...on-a-my99-996/

The part itself, for a 99-01 996, is around $200: http://www.porscheoemparts.com/partl...layCatalogid=0

I imagine a Mk2 isn't too much different but I don't know that for sure.

So...given the above...I would say that no way in Hades is it a $1500-2000 job. 1/3 of that amount seems much more reasonable.

Good luck.

The Mk II requires the engine to be unbolted from the motor mounts and lowered w/ a jack to get the necessary clearance to remove. I did it in my driveway. Definitely not worth $1500. The MK I is easier, but they are both DIYs. It's much easier than it sounds, once you've done one you can do the next one in half the time. I tried to get it out without lowering the engine and it just wouldn't clear. If I had lowered the engine firat, I would have gotten it out in about a half hour. Reinstalled in a little more than that.
