997 Shifter vs 997 Short Shift Kit

I have a 02 C4S 6 speed and am in the process of installing a new clutch, plugs and a myriad of other maintenance issues.....(IMS refit and RMS FYI)

Since I am spending a few dollars on this I always feel that I should see some major difference for my $$'s and figured that a SSK would do that...

Sunset pointed out that a 997 Shifter was popular vs the 997 SSK.... the dollar value is significant... BUT.... has anyone an opinion? Personally I am leaning towards a SSK... thoughts?

Here's my comparison of the 996 and 997 shifters.

I installed the 997 SSK and (IMO) it is one of the best upgrades I have done. I love it and will not go back..

I used to be all about getting the shortest shifts but as I became older, the notchiness was growing a little tired on me and so I feel the 997 shifter is a great compromise between shorter shifts and feel, for me at least. However, if I was a track junkie, I would definitely go for ssk imo.

I notice that notchiness in the B&M shifter for sure and didnt like it. I do not notice it in the 997 SSK.

I know B&M 996 SSK was notchy for sure as I had one and took it off. How much more notchy is the 997 SSK vs 997 regular? My thought is that it is still notchier but not as much as the 996 SSK.

I do not know as I have not tried a regular 997 shifter so I have no reference. We put the B&M on my friends 996 and like you he did not like it and took it off two weeks later. I also do not have any reference points for the 996 SSK. But, and it could just be me, I am very happy with the 997 SSK. It does not feel notchy to me and is nothing like the B&M. I found the original 996 shifter to be very long and sloppy...

987 and 997: similar shift feel?

maybe a stoopid/noob question, but is the shift linkage/throw/etc the same between 987c and 997? i'm curious b/c i'm interested in upgrading my 996TT to the 997 shifter (not SSK), but i don't know anyone with a 997 to see what it feels like before making the committment.

however, i do have a buddy with an '08 cayman S (ie, 987). so would his throw/feel be a good approximation of what i might expect to get out of a 997 upgrade in my 996?

as for install, i've read that you "just use B&M's install guide", but if it's the one with the link on this page below, it doesn't look quite as easy as some [more mechanically inclined than me] ppl have made out.

I switched out my B&M SSK for the 997 SSK and the throws are fractionally longer, but definitely smoother. I like it.

I finally went with the 997 SSK and love it... positive shifts... perhaps a little harder into first til the tranny oil warms up but not an issue.... I think the key is staying with the OEM SSK...

Enjoy your 997 SSK which makes a day and night difference on our 996 imo. staying with OEM will never go wrong...worst case you can always go back without cutting anything

I am extremely pleased with the 997 shifter I installed in my 996. Best mod I've done, and I've done almost all of them

I was lucy enough to try a 2010 GT3 3,8 a few days ago. Amazing car! I liked everything about it except the OEM short shift. If it was my car I would have installed the standard shift instead.
