Can I replace my 3.6 in my 996w/Tiptronic with a 3.8 from a 997? I know Roock says he can, but which is better - rebuild the original 3.6 with bigger pistons, etc., or buy a 997 engine? Anyone with experience in this? I'm in San Francisco.

What kind of price are you expecting for this to be done? It seems like it would be high enough that you might just consider selling and re-buying a larger engine car.

My engine is blown, so I guess this will cost near 20.

Yes, I did it to my 02 c4s with manual tranny. Not sure if the tip makes it harder. Depending on how much the 3.8 costs you, it should easily be done for 15 to 20k including motor.

go to renntech and search for rebuilds, Rook... it seems like for some people going in that route with him turned out into a very expensive fiasco....

Did you have to change the ECU and all the wiring as well? Wasn't that a significant additional cost beyong just replacing the engine?

The best way to do this is to rebuild your original engine with LNengineering.com Nickies sleeves & JE pistons that will not only yield the 3.8 displacement increase but will provide a much stronger crankcase & cylinders, pistons, & IMS bearing. Since it is the correct year engine for your car it requires zero alterations to any other component.

I can do this in my shop for about $13,000. It takes about 2 months to have the sleeves installed @ LNengineering

I had to get a custom 3.6 to 3.8 tune, which was done by fvd. No wiring had to be replaced.

That about boring the 3.6 to 3.8, is probably the best way to go. And way cheaper.

save yourself the trouble and shoot yourself. it's quicker and less painful than doing anything with Fabian Roock.

Rook = very bad reviews. You can convert the the 3.6 to a 3.8, reliably, by Flat 6 innovations. Bulletproof.

Ditto on recommending the F6I 3.8L upgrade route...
