a lot of people say that the boxster is a better car ? any of you guys come from a boxster ? what are your impressions ? i'm getting ready to purchase a 2000 996.

 

A friend of mine has a 99 Boxster.... Fun to drive.... A little tight for me but I am 6'3".... my only real complaint would be the visibility.... Top down.... Good.... Top up..... Forget it... Not interested in driving!

 

I had a boxster S, and now a 1999 996. I prefer the 996. Boxster handles well but I like the bigger car better.

 

Boxter a better car? I don't think so. Look at the price when new. A 911 will run circles around a Boxter!

 

i also like the larger 966 and larger engine but do not want to be disappointed with the handling compared to the boxster.

 

Would those people just happen to be chicks or ****?

 

i wouldn't be so quick to judge . i know people who have 3.8 s with x51 in there old *** boxsters . those cars with the mid engine layout and that kind of power will tool any 996 around a track and hang with the gt3 cars. those cars are cool but i can't wait for my 996 .

 

I just came from a 2000 Boxster S to a 2001 Carrera Cab... interior room and power goes to the Carrera but for handling the Boxster S by far. The front and rear trunk options on the Boxster were also pretty handy. With the top up the Carrera is livable but both are nice with top down.

Best car = Carrera engine in a Boxster!

 

I had a '97 Boxster and have had my 2000 996 from new. I prefer the 996 - even to a current 987 Boxster and Boxster S which I get as loaners from my dealership. Make no mistake the Boxster is a great car with a mid-engined layout but still prefer the 996.

 

i currently have a 986 S with the ROW M030 . this car is so much fun in the twisties much more fun than my wifes evo X. i hope the 996 will be as much fun to drive and i'm looking forward to the rigidity of a coupe also.

 

the only chance to prefer a Boxter over a 911 is to compare an 987S to a 1998 996.
And like a wise guy said once:
"The only reason to buy Boxter is if you cant afford a 911". See may be a fun to drive car but you cant consider your self a real Porsche owner. The Germans are always "you get what you paid for..", Unlike Americans, the avoid wholesaling and discounts...

 

The 996 drives differently. Heavier butt. But the sum of all the differences, including interior, perception, etc, decants the balance in favor of the 996 for most of people. I had both and like the 996 better.

The boxster is nicer that one would think. The 996 is all you expected.

Like other poster said only reason boxsters exist is for people who can not afford a 911. Oh and putting a $30k engine in a $9k car still does not make it a 911

 

I had an 04 boxster S. I bought it new off the showroom floor. It was an incredible car. I just wanted a lot more power, so I got a 911TT. A 911 isnt going to give you much more performance than a boxster S, especially since boxsters are lighter and now have bigger engines. If you are looking at a 2000 911, I would suggest looking at a newer boxster as well (i think they went to a 3.4? in 06). It will both handle better and probably accelerate faster. try asking this question on the 987 board, you might get different opinions as well.

For me, the Boxster would be easier to drive because of its mid engine layout. This is why people say that the handling is so good (and possibly better than the 911). In comparison, the 911 would be harder to drive since its engine is in the rear.

That being said, I opted for the 911. I find that there is a certain satisfaction in taming the rear engined beast because there is a lot of skill needed drive it well. I also think that if you're good 911 driver that moving to a mid engine car will be an easy transition. You will be able to drive a mid engine car (or any car) very well in a short amount of time. Going from a mid to rear engine car would be a tougher transition I think.
