CEL after 20 minute drive
CEL after 20 minute drive
Well just as I was sitting outside my garage the CEL came on... Nothin sounds crazy but I'm wondering if I can just take it to autozone to get scanned or somewhere other than the dealer. Any help is appreciated. I'll see if it comes on again this morning or what...
imo you should buy a scanner, you can get them for arround 60 bucks which is well worth it for the convenience factor, but also so you can scan immediately rather than having to keep driving with a cel, i would rather know what the code is immediately and make sure its nothing where further driving the car could cause more damage
Ph3n0m--I agree with you that the gas cap is most likely it. Before replacing the cap, simply remove and reinstall the existing cap, clear the codes (with scanner, or simply disconnect the battery for a few minutes), and see if the P0442 code reappears. If it does, replace the cap with a new one, clear codes and drive on.
If the above steps don't solve the problem then inspect the canister and hoses that make up the EVAP system (captures evaporative vapors from the fuel tank system). The P0442 code indicates a very small leak.
Good luck.

The "proper" one would be to purchase a durametric...which would be Porsche specific...
other options would be a generic one...60-70 bucks from walmart or such...it reads all the codes you basically need....I do have to look up the codes online but it gets the job done such as deleting etc...
A durametic is definitely recommended if you want to do other fancy stuff...

hahaha autozone won't clear the code, said to remove the negative battery, but i'd rather not lose all my radio settings idk...

well, i went to a local shop who said they could clear it. The guy was too big to actually get down and get into the car that he fiddled around for a second and told me it wasn't OBD II. i was so pissed. i guess better that than f up my port. i'll be buying a scanner today.
i'm about to buy an obd2 scanner online and i dont know whether i should buy the VW specific one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/320644327048...witem=&vxp=mtr or the universal: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Universal-Ca...item33619fc68c
