advice on rims, they keep getting bent

Hello, I have a real nice set of OEM rims on my 911. Now I live in Manhattan and they keep getting bent from pot holes, I get flat tire. One rim is now beyond repair, and I can't find exact same one. So looking to buy a set of 4 I see them on amazon for 700-1000 for a set. Does it matter what kind they are, in terms of weight and inertia? Also are some rims better at taking pot holes than others maybe?

I guess the answer to my question is to sell the car for as long as I live in the city, but that's a different story.

You may need to run 17" wheels. That would gain you more tire sidewall which would better absorb pothole impact.

+1 Not a bad thought.

I agree with FLY the only way around it is going with 17 inch rims and bigger side wall tire. If you want to stick with OEM rims look at a set of porsche snow wheels and tires.

Did your OEM wheels get destroyed? They are stronger than most aftermarket wheels.

I'd not buy cheap ones. They will only end up destroyed fast.

even factory rims will crack, especially manhattan FDR drive... the roads are a haven for bent rims, best advice is to know where to go get the rims fixed and watch the road.

Ny and NJ have the most horrible roads out there. Hard to avoid just need to pay attention ,I don't care what kind of rim you have if you hit it hard enough it will break.

I'm in NJ and had the same problem, finally went with 18" BBS LM'S, Very strong Forged Wheel. Forged IMO is the only way to for extra protection, not bullit or NY roads proof, but, better than cast wheels.

I also suggest 17" wheels. The other benefit is that tires are much cheaper too.

2 of my rears have been replaced on separate occasions by my insurance company. They both cracked the same way due to pot holes, I just think the rims are old and weak after 10 years of pot holes and tire mounting machines. The pic is kind of blurry but it shows the crack is always on the inside for some reason.

Also, I use my insurance company because they pay for the rim and tire(they say the tire is ruined once its driven on while flat) for a $200 deductible.

I too drive around Manhattan and it can be tough.
You really need to drive slowly, (not that you can really speed in NYC anyway lol).

Which body 996 do you have?

Over inflate your tires. Not ideal but it might work. What wheel are you using now?

Failing that.....stock up on a used set or two. That way you will be prepared.

What would over inflating the tires do for vibration or bent rims?

It won't fix the rim but a higher inflation will help protect your tire and rim.

It's not ideal due to possible uneven wear and a smaller contact patch but it beats going to 17"s
