delivery questions

Guys,

I'm going to be taking delivery on Sat of an '03 C2. I have a couple of questions:

This car is a dealer exchange. It was on the lot of another dealer. So I imagine it's been test driven a bit and has got some miles on her. What would you guys consider a maximum acceptable mileage for a car that is being sold as new? At what point should I be worried? At what point should I be looking for a discount?

Also, how much of an issue is test drive abuse on these cars? Is there anything I should look for as signs of abuse?

Unfortunately the car was exchanged at least twice. Once from MD to Alabama and then back to VA. I know new Porsches are delivered from the port very carefully. Are dealers as careful about covering the cars on exchanges?

Any other things which should be on my delivery checklist?

Sorry for the newbie questions, but this is my first P-car. Thanks.

I would not be too concerned if there was less than 200 miles on the car, but usually under 100 is expected for 'new' cars.

Be sure to go over the car in daylight, very carefully, to assure the fit and finish is perfect.

Bring a tire gauge. Most deliveries fail to check this - and be sure tires are in excellent condition. While you're down there, inspect the wheels for curb rash (scrapes). Don't hesitate to write everything down with the dealer GM right there, and have them sign a copy.

Make sure all options listed are on the car.

Get the salesman to go over each feature so you understand it.

Bring some tunes to verify the sound system with music you know well.

Open all compartments, check all documents, look for white sticker under front hood listing all options by code.

Look for any mysterious flaws in exterior paint.

Drive the car with the dealer to make sure the only noises you hear are from the engine.

Enjoy!

RJFabCab came up with this a few months back :
1. Take pics at the dealer.

2. Buy a couple of quarts of Mobil-1 to have sitting around (is it still 0W-40?).

3. Consider having them program your door locks to your preference (e.g. auto-lock on starting the engine, auto-lock at speeds above 3 mph, etc...) before you pick up the car. It's an easy deal for them, and it will save you a future trip.

4. Ask them what the "deal" is on your Christophorus subscription. Mine was NOT complimentary. Others have received "free" subscriptions. I think this is probably dealer specific.

5. Check your tire pressures as soon as you get home. They are typically far overpressurized during transport.

6. Drive home as fast and as safe as possible and throw your pics up on the board!

7. PARTY!!! Woo Hoo!!!

Here's another one from Kevin on funcars:
PRE-DELIVERY
1. Prior to picking-up vehicle, instruct dealer:
(a) To program doors to lock at 5 mph
(b) Do not machine wash or power buff
2. Proof of insurance and driver license
3. Bank draft instruction, check, etc
4. Camera
EXTERIOR (prior to driving)
5. Examine Outside of Car - check body for nicks or scratches, ensure good paint and clear coat
6. Wheels - run fingertips around rims, check for rust on wheel bolts, check inside rims
7. Tires - check for correct pressure (take cold reading)
8. Door handles - function properly
9. Make sure configurations and options are correct
(details specific to my car are here)
10. Rear license plate frame - well secured. NO front plate.
11. Windstop - secured
12. Top liner attachment - well secured and not broken
13. Top - check for scratch marks (soft and hardtop)
INTERIOR
14. Interior leather - check for scratches or damages
15. Interior lights - come on without key in ignition when door is open and light set to center position and check various instrument lights
16. Windows - close properly against the top when closing
17. Doorsills
INSTRUMENTS
18. A/C and Heater - function properly
19. Radio - All functions work
20. Alarm – All functions work
21. Top operation - open and close top
22. Trunks - open and close front and rear trunks “gracefully” (Learn how to operate emergency trunk release)
23. Spare tire and tools are in trunks
TEST DRIVE
24. Oil gauge, temp gauge function properly - make sure you have oil and engine warmed up
25. Clutch - check for squeaking noises
26. Wheel alignment - some previous posts mentioned some cars had bad wheel alignment at delivery
27. Smooth idle
28. Odometer should show no more than 45 miles
29. Check for leaks before and after test drive
30. Anything wrong with the chassis? Handling?
31. Full tank of gas
DOCUMENTS
32. Current authorized Porsche Dealer Directory
33. Maintenance Book
34. Owner’s Manual
35. Portfolio (for the books to go in)
36. Radio Instruction Book.
37. Radio Security Code
38. Roadside assistance booklet and temporary membership card
39. Three keys (two with remote)
40. Warranty Book
41. KEEP WINDOW STICKER
BREAK-IN
42. Owner’s manual states not to exceed 4200 rpm for the first 2500 miles
43. Make sure you have oil and engine is warmed up
44. Keep the engine under load, but vary the engine speed
45. Redline is not recommended at any time during the break-in period
46. Check the oil gauge again (no loss is a good sign)
47. Wash Car (this will force you to look at the entire surface of the car to find something that you missed at the dealer)
48. Buy BumperPlugs.
49. Buy car wash, wax, leather cleaner, etc.

As someone said about the option codes, they are listed under the hood. If need be take a pic of the sticker then post on here and people can help translate what you SHOULD have...

Under 200 miles the car is still considered new, it sounds like you have made a deal on this car since you are taking delivery on Sat so as far as a discount goes you should have negotiated that already, these cars are driven harder in Germany before being shipped over than anyone will test drive one.

Yep, we did negotiate something but the dealer could not verify the mileage. So we left open the possibility of looking at the price again if the mileage is not "reasonable". I just wanted to get a sense of what "reasonable" might be.

Everyone, thanks for all the great input again. You guys are making this easy. I'll put together sort of a customized checklist with the option codes I should see, etc.

Actually, JASCLASS, you mentioned that the cars are driven hard in Germany. Does Porsche still test each engine and each car as hard they used to? I read that with the 964s and maybe 993s they redlined each engine on the bench and did 25 hard stops with each car. But I wasn't sure if they still do that on the 996s.

I took euro delivery last june. On the factory tour we saw the room they bench test all engines in. So i would say that they do. We were also told that each car is test drivin off the assembly floor any were from 15 to 20km. My car at pick up had 16.6km. When entering the factory we did see several cars with all the body protection tape on leaving and coming back in to the lot.

Cool, it's nice to know they still do that.
