Strange speedometer LCD display 2000 996

I was removing my instrument cluster to replace a backlight bulb for the odometer. Somehow in the process of removing it, the MPH LCD fractured? Picture attached. Here is a thread about replacing the backlight bulb.

Has anyone seen a LCD do this?

I have an Alaska shaped one that grows randomly over the MPH on my cluster. I was just going to buy a replacement cluster unless there is another option?

Module Masters replaced one in my Audi. I'm going to bring it to them in the next few weeks to see if they can replace this LCD. I'll let you know what I find out.

Its been a while since anyones responded to this thread. Tried finding a more recent post but didnt find one.

Any updates on the LCD clusters? I had the exact issue this past month and the starburst/lake formation is getting larger.

Thanks for any help!

I have a 99c2. On a recent trip to the mountains mine developed the starburst pattern similar to the one pictured above in the LCD during a day trip to a much higher altitude. The more I drove the bigger it got. Got home and left it in the garage overnight. The blemish was gone the next day. Took the car on the same trip and it returned. And again it was gone the next day after returning home. Changing pressure? Colder temps? I don't know. Just my experience.

They used to sell replacement LCDs on ebay but you had to solder it in.

slightly off topic - does anyone know if the 2000 model year digital can toggle between mph and metric km?

I know I could in my old 2004 car
