Cigarette-lighter removal?

I'm nearly finished changing all my interior's trim to carbon fiber. The installation has been very straight forward...a piece of cake. - Sadly, on the last piece, I'm stumped. -I've an '01 with the three piece upper center console. I've removed it without event, but I can't figure out how to remove the cigarette-lighter from my old piece to reinstall in the new carbon fiber piece. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

I just did this on Saturday for the second time - it's amazing what PITA this piece is!

My car's an '05, but I assume the parts are the same.

1. There's a green metal conductor piece held on by a black clip attached to the lighter internals - remove this.
2. You'll notice on the outside of the lighter, there is a black lip over the clear plastic trim. The internals of the lighter (metal parts) are part of the black piece. Push it from the black side so it comes out the front. You may need to use a pliar to loosen because it fits snug in the clear plastic or lightly tap if from behind with a tool.
3. The clear plastic piece comes out from the front as well. Again, you may have to twist it from the rear with a pliars to loosen the grip. There are couple of clear plastic clips which are part of the piece. They should slide out between the plastic tabs ("C" shaped) which are attached to the console surround.
4. Reinstall in reverse.

Take your time and try not to force any of the pieces too hard.

Eric

The cigarette lighter is one of the most temperamental pieces to remove. Check with renntech.org--there are a few threads with detailed instructions which may or may not work! I've done it three times, and each time was different...It will come out eventually.

thank you too !!! this worked for me,, just follow it word for word, the little clips are inside , look INSIDE the metal housing where the lighter plugs in, there are two LITTLE clips pushing and locking in !!

How do you remove the green part in step one? I have tried everything I can think of and it is starting to break apart, as there seems to be no way of disconnecting it without damage. I got the black clip off very easily.

If your old one is the European spec one that doesn't quite work for any US lighter accessories, now would be a good time to replace it with the US spec one. Not expensive. In that case. Just break the old one up with a pair of wire cutters and don't waste any time trying to save it.
