Porsche Roof Rack

I purchased a roof rack model number 996.801.105.00 and am finding that the bolts (M6x60) that attach the feet of the cross bars to the adapters(which fit in the slots on the roof) are too small for the threaded holes in the adapter. Does anyone know if M6 is the correct size bolt? I've confirmed that the bolts are M6 and that is what is shown on the parts list. I've also tried an M8 but that's too big.

I purchased from ebay and am contacting the seller but just thought I'd ask here.

Thank you!

Assuming a coupe, the mounts onto the roof use an M6x40 (assuming fine thread).

I can't find the info readily, but having owned this rack before, the screws that mount the cross bars onto the mounts use M6 as well, however I'm not sure about their length or pitch, sorry.

Did you try removing one of those screws from the crossbars and seeing if it will thread into any of the mounting bracket holes?

My suggestion would be to take the mounting bracket to a good hardware store, such as ACE hardware with a big bolt selection. They will be able to find the proper thread size and pitch, then you can determine the length you need by comparing with the bolts you already have.

Also, if you are a contributing memeber on Renntech, org you can download the RTS system installation manual here:

Thanks for the reply logray. I removed the bolt that connects the crossbars to the adapter and it slips into the adapter without touching the threads. M8 bolt size is too big and I'm not sure if there's an M7 size.

If I stick with this rack I'll probably have to drill out the holes and re-thread.

Yes M8 is way too big.

Interesting, I wonder if the threads on the adapter mounts are stripped??? Might be worth finding out from the previous owner.

Or are you inserting them at a slight angle? They don't go straight in and there should be two holes to try, and you have four bolts. It would be strange if 4 bolts don't work in 8 different holes.

Tapping would work, or helicoil or timesert... or new adapters...

Threads are not stripped and I've confirmed that the bolt that screws into the adapter is an M6. I've checked all the adapters and the hole sizes are all the same (appears to be M7 if such exists). I've yet to find a screw that fits the adapters (SAE and metric).

The kit and pieces came sealed and it was advertised as "new". I'm calling the seller today to see if they have adapters with the correct size bolt holes.

I'll post pics once complete.

Yes there is such thing as an M7.

Did you check to see if it was fine or super-fine thread though?

A good hardware store should have the right bolt! Or go to a good machine shop, usually they will have tap and die sizes for just about every size imaginable, and can also tell you what size it is so you know what bolt to order.

Another idea would be to call a Porsche dealer and see if they an lookup the bolt size for you. I'm not finding it anywhere, perhaps renntech.org might be another place you could ask.

Not sure what happened to this set of adapters but I sent them back to the seller and they had the adapters plugged and tapped to the correct size. No problems with the rack now! Picx below.

After the initial install it takes at most 5 minutes.

You can adjust the width of the crossbar. That's what makes the initial install a little longer. Maybe 30 mins.

@logray, yeah it seems like that's what happened. Stripped and then just drilled and tapped to a larger size. However, the roof rack, and more importantly, the adapters arrived sealed. It looked like it was straight from the factory. That's why I was so surprised when things weren't completely right. Anyway, everything is good and I got it at a good price. Not a great price but good. Thanks to everyone that posted! Love this forum.

Now I just need to stop driving so much and start riding. Need to to get ready for the MS 150 and the Hotter 'n Hell Hundred. But damn, it's hard not to drive these cars.
