Looking at a 2002 996 C2 coupe...

Thought I might get more opinions on this if I just create a new thread, instead of posting it in my intro thread.

I found a 2002 996 C2 coupe nearby. It has 104k miles, but it looks pretty good (scuffs on the center console, but I can replace that). No service records from the second owner (2 owner car) because he did maintenance himself. Dealer is asking $22500 for it.

Clutch was said to have been replaced by the first owner (who sold the car at 80,000 miles). I do plan on getting a PPI done before buying.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? Mainly concerned about the high mileage it has. Car is located in Costa Mesa, CA.

Thanks for any help in advance!

2nd owner doesnt have a list of items done? Get a PPI. I wouldn't be worried about miles. Many 996's with 100k plus.

Thanks for replying!

Nope, none. Well, none that the dealer has. I will most definitely get a PPI done though, thinking about getting the PPI from Stuttgart Performance, one of the nearest shops from the car's location.

$22.5 is a bit steep for a 100K 996. $19.5 would be more reasonable given a clean PPI. Good luck.

Even if it's a MkII? Thanks, that gives me a better idea of the prices - I'll try to negotiate with the dealer on price (after PPI of course)

Yep, I definitely would NOT pay more than 19 or so for it....

Keep in mind - this car (if not at a porsche dealer) may be coming from an auction where the dealer bought it for 14k......

There is a bunch of great 996's out there for that price...

Thanks very much for the input. I'll try to negotiate something around 19-21k, 996 prices around here are more in the mid 20's from what I've seen. Dealer seems like a decent guy though, real honest, and not really pushy about selling the car.

Pm me if you'd be interested in an 02 with a little over half the miles of this car with service records, new clutch, ims, aos, etc.

+996

If it is the color you want and has all the stuff you want, don't get hung up on the price, IMHO.

I sold my pristine, 2002 996 with 157K miles, all records, up to date maintenance, everything carbon fiber, immaculate for a quick sale of $15,500. you can do better.

I wouldn't worry about the mileage that much either if the PPI checks out. My 996 has 107K and it's doing well. One thing to keep in mind though is that a 10 year old car with over 100K on the clock will have some things that go wrong due to wear and age. These things may not turn up in a PPI, but may cause you problems if you don't have funds set aside for maintenance. I've replaced my radiator fans, my water pump and my drop link bushings this year. They weren't defective or bad, they simply wore out with time and use. These things happen in any car with this age and mileage.

Good luck with your 996 quest.

+1 My exact sentiments. The most common dealer markup on any used vehicle is $6K. There's a good chance this particular dealer bought the 996 for $16K. +$3K ($16K+$3K=19K) is a decent profit. If it where the color and options I was seeking, I may throw in another $1-1.5K. Good luck.

Pretty much what these folks said ^

Get a PPI. I bought my 03 coupe with 91k for less than 22.5. If the PPI checks out, it's clean, and it's the colors/options you seek, maybe 22.5 is okay with you. I tend to buy that way. If I feel the car is worth XX, I'll pay it. I'm not into squeezing the last dollar out of the seller. Still, I think 22.5 is significantly higher than market. What are the color/options?

re: the mileage, my car is almost to 100k now and rock solid. If it's been looked after properly, it should last a long, long time.

I'm not very picky with the options, mostly I just really want the nice leather interior, and it can't be yellow, or a convertible, and certainly not both at the same time. Aside from that, I think the 996 is a pretty complete package already.

I'll try to look for other options while working out some stuff with this car I'm looking at. Maybe something with full service records, a better price, and maybe even one in my favorite color: red. I'm pretty happy with this one though, and if the PPI comes back clean, I don't think I'll have any regrets.

Very glad to hear that the high mileage really shouldn't be a concern. Thanks for all the replies so far everyone, you've all been very helpful!
