Oil pressure too high?

On my last drive over the weekend I paid close attention to my oil pressure. At cold start up (55 deg heated garage) it read about 4.5 bars at idle. It took about 12 minutes of driving before the car warmed up and this dropped to about 2 ish. But then, when I started to rally I noticed between 4 and 5 thousand rpms it was consistently at 4.5 bars. Is this too high or standard. I read in a previous forum that it should be 3.5 bars at 5 thousand rpms? Any opinions or advice. Issues or good to go? Thanks, Chris

Sounds normal to me. Only thing you have to worry about is if its always 5 bar, then you have Internal Issues. if it is fluctuating its normal, specially if you see it drop to 3ish mean oil is running smooth thru system.

thick oil at cold temps, hard for it to flow, hence higher PSI. As oil warms up, its thinning out and the PSI should drop. Hence in winter its recommended to use thinner viscosity oil(5w30) and in summer thicker (10w40). etc.

Stick with a Xw40 weight or higher oil. I've read that Xw30 weight oils do not agree with newer variocam plus.

winter/all year
0w40
5w40
10w40
5w50

summer/warmer climates all year (or use it anywhere but be careful for the first few miles to warm it up. Unless you live where temps drop below 30F very regularly which case use the oils above)
15w50
20w50

Porsche basically recommends 5w40 now.

Thanks for the info. I'm running Amsoil European with high ZDDP. It is a 5W40. I may try to find the Mobil 5W50 for summer driving. Any thoughts on this oil and weight? Thanks again, Chris

I know a lot of you guys will properly disagree with what Iam going to say but what I been using in all my cars and also know many other people who use it who all have sports cars and like to run them ... is put a little Marvel Mystery Oil in there with your oil ... not that much ... just a a little ... in my 996, I add about 3 measured lines from the bottle ... what a difference it makes especially for high revving cars ... helps the car with cold starts also ... and you will actually feel a difference in the car the way it runs ... Been using that stuff for over 20 yrs now ... I swear by it .. My father has a 99 BMW 5 series .. has over 200,000 miles on the clock ... Car runs like new ... the mechanic that works on it can't believe how the car runs ... don't know the science behind it but know many people here like to use it ...

I work for one of the majors and I specialize in passenger car motor oils. The Mobil 1 5W-50 is a great oil and meets Porsche engine approval A40, as well as the popular 0W-40. To be honest, the M1 0W-40 is really the gold standard of 40 weight synthetic engine oils in the industry and unless you live in a hot climate and drive your car aggressively, there is really no reason to use the 5W-50. The 0W-40 is much more readily available, has a TOn of engine approvals and less expensive as a result. Another thing to consider is that most of engine wear occurs at start up too, and having a base oil weight of 0, you get an oil that has better cold flow properties than a 5W, 10W etc. Just another advantage of M1 0W-40 but there are better oils out there in my opinion.

Not a bad product at all, we don't recommend aftermarket add ins but I have seen real world results and your premises for helping with cold start ups is true. It's basically just a VERY light engine oil.

Nearest I can tell -- that gauge is almost useless in telling you anything meaningful. As long as it doesn't always stay at the top, or the bottom, you're probably fine. Even then, it probably means there's something wrong with the sensor (rather than your oil pressure).
