My second Porsche, let the fun begin (cosmetic help)

So I just purchased my second Porsche, although it is my first in many years. I actually learned to drive a stick shift on a 944 Turbo years ago, which I have no doubt contributed to it's early demise. I'm a big gear head, as is my wife, and this car is going to be sort of a fun weekend ride. We'll use it as an alternative to our Lotus Elise when we want to take a fun drive, but also maybe pickup groceries, or just enjoy a little nicer interior/sound system than the Elise affords.

My new ride is a '99 996, black on black. Apparently some sort of hip-hop producer owned it before the guy I bought it from (according to him), and the sound system in this thing is insane. There are two giant amps in the trunk, powering 2 large subwoofers and a DVD player system. I'm a car guy, not an AV club member, so I don't really know or care what it all is. Sounds nice though.

Other than the stereo, the car is mostly stock. A Fabspeed exhaust sits on the back, and has a nice throaty sound to it. I'll be overhauling service items and probably swapping in a K&N, replacing plugs/wires and all that in the next few weeks, weather permitting.

I'm really excited about this car, and the long term plans will probably be a turbo or supercharger, or possibly switching it over to a track only lightweight for SCCA. We'll see where it goes as I learn more about the car.

I do want to make some immediate cosmetic adjustments. The front bumper has a small crack, and the overall paint quality isn't stellar. I've been looking at wings, aero kits and the like, but I haven't been able to source exactly what I'm looking for. Does anyone know what it would take to emulate this look? Is there an easy, all in one kit that I could buy with the wing, bumpers, skirts and so on? I seen several for the GT2 & RS look, but nothing to get the C4S style. Do I just need to buy the factory OEM rear bumper? Obviously I'm new at this, and will spend some time in the next few weeks really learning the ins and outs, but figured you guys might have some good advice, or places to start digging.

There's a grey one on this site that is amazing, but I can't find a picture at the moment. Similar style to the blue one below, but a little more subdued.

Is this a fairly easy upgrade to make? I really like the looks, cosmetically, and based on another thread here, I might go with one of those vinyl wraps. I really like the subdued/matte look on these bodies. Some sort of black/powdercoated wheels are probably on the way as well.

Basically, I'm new here, wanted to say hello, and gauge your thoughts/opinions on these cosmetic fix ups. Any help is of course appreciated.

thanks-
ScoutsOut

That's a GT2 rear wing on a wide body. My personal favorite. Although some say the GT2 wing doesn't look good without an updated front and rear bumper, as well as skirts.

A lot of aftermarket kits are difficult to install, and they require modifications to fit spot on and look factory. The factory kits are very expensive, and some very rare.

Painting is very expensive.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm willing to spend some money, as the goal with this car was to start with a modest base, and build it up. I convinced the wife that a sub 20k car would be a lot more fun putting another $50k into over the next year or two, than spending $70k at once on a bone stock ride. We'll see who is right!

I'd basically like to add the wide body kit, the wing, and those side duct looking things from the 997. I know, I know, all you purists out there. It isn't a 997, but I like the look, and it's just a fun little project car. Not exactly like I'm chopping up a 60's Carrera GTS here. I'd then either paint the whole thing, or go with one of those matte wraps.

scoutsout, can you share pics and more info about the sound system in your car? I guess I must be an AV fan, because I'm interested in that stuff.

@144mph: I don't take delivery of the car until Friday night, but I'll be sure to get some pics and more info for you by the weekend.

@alpine003: My old school knowledge is rearing its ugly head. I'm guessing the 996s are coil pack ignitions? I didn't think coil packs came into fashion that early, but I guess Porsche is an innovator. Did the 993s use coil packs or a traditional distributor?

You learn something new every day!

If you spend a few thousands more you get a 997

Not for a few thousand more than I paid for this. Got this one for a song from a guy warrant is moving cross country, and can't take all his toys with him. my initial plan was to start with a 997, but for the price, I couldn't pass this up.

It is certainly not a waste if it's not detrimental to the performace of the car and you enjoy it.

Before you go too far, have you consider looking at a 996 Turbo. It already has the performance upgrade and wide body. I suspect your performance and cosmetic overhaul will approach the price of a 996 Turbo, and now you get the GT1 engine without the RMS and IMS worries. kenny
