Hello I'm having my IMS done as well as a clutch and RMS. My question is do I need to replace the H2o pump? The car is a 2004 with 15k. I'm only doing the IMS because I plan on keeping the car for about 5 years and lose sleep at night. No signs of bearing failiure but we all no about the 1-2% who are the unlucky ones, and I'm not a gambler

Hi. Let me know what you've been quoted for the IMS, Clutch and RMS. You may also want to consider the AOS while in there? Thanks...keep us all posted. I'm doing those same 4 items and have also considered the water pump / mine is a 2001. Have you considered the 160F low therm too?

 

I'll let you know how I make out, I spoke to my indy about the AOS its about $250 to due during the IMS and clutch. I haven't looked at the 160f whats that all about?

 

Many of the "experts" and engine rebuilders are using a 20-25 deg lower thermostat that is FULLY open at 185 vs starting to open and not fully open until 205/210 deg.

Sounds good to me as we get hot here in the lower elevations. Supposedly, the deal is it opens earlier to keep your oil (which is 15 deg hotter than the coolant) from getting too hot and possibly hurting your engine. The debate regarding this is "open is open" which I agree. But, if you can keep it at a good temp it is easier than trying to cool down from high temps.

 

For the limited use I'm going to stick with the stock thermo. However I'd like to see some data on the water pump, and what happens to it over time rather then miles. I mean 15,000 miles on a water pump is nothing. I am have the system flushed and antifreeze replaced. My owners book states every 10 years replace. as well as some other fluids.

 

My water pump blew at 39K miles on the freeway but within spitting distance of an exit. The car was about 5 years old. Cost was 1400 bucks to get the car back on the road.

 

I can't remember where I saw it posted but I remember a preventive measure guidance of every 3 years or 60k miles... I just did mine on my 2001 996 with 89k miles since I was not sure if the previous owner had done it.
