Noticed a diff option for short shifter???
Yes, in the pic see the large brass colored (anodized steel, I guess)disc, like 3" in diameter, on the arm that has the pivot that you cover with the blue plate for the adjustable pivot? It is welded to that arm to provide momentum and a weighted feel for easier engagement of the gear. Same effect as using a heavy shift **** on a normal, direct connect tranny. In 2, 4, 6, that disc comes forward towards the black bracket you installed. On my '02, it hit the bracket before the gear was fully engaged.
I have the B&M Short Shifter in my C4 and it is much better than the OEM shifter. Would it enhance the performance of the B&M SS to add the trans mounted unit

I am planning to have a local indy install a B&M short shifter in my 996 targa. I had originally planned to buy the following:
B&M SHORT SHIFTER - 1998+ 911/996 97+ PORSCHE BOXTER FREE SHIPPING ($257.23)
http://www.titanmotorsports.com/bmshorshif19.html
but then noticed this:
B&M 2002-2004 PORSCHE 911 CARRERA SHORT SHIFTER SYSTEM ($75)
http://www.titanmotorsports.com/bm20po911cas.html
Probably an obvious question but what is the difference in the end result? Do I need to buy the first if I am starting with a stock setup? Do I need both?
Thanks all.

Well, remember that the two would approximately multiply. So if you got, say 15% throw reduction from shifter SSK, then went to 30% on the tranny mount, I would assume you would get around 0.85 x 0.7= 0.6, so a 40% reduction. Don't think it would enhance it per se, though, just make it shorter.b Like i said, I had the B&M shifter SSK and it was too notchy for my likes, but the tranny mount is perfect. I'm at 15%, but plan to try the 30% and see how that feels. It takes seconds (with a lift) to make the change.

I also would be interested to find out if/when you change your ratio from 15 to 30% to see if it has any effect on the feel(specifically if it brings a more notchy feel).
Short Throw stage 1
Thanks for the tips everyone. I also just ordered the Titan kit from Amazon for $27. We'll see how that feels and maybe pull the trigger on the full B&M setup. I found the "B&M Precision Sport Manual Shifter - 45135" for $231 from autoplicity.com at http://http://autoplicity.com/produc..._shifters.aspx . For anyone that is already running the B&M short shifter how long did the install take?

I'm sure you can do it quicker if you're in a rush. That is for the short shifter only. Good luck
Alpine003: It will affect the shift if you use both. Remember, you can have too much reduction. After a few days of the 30% reduction I wouldn't want to go any more as driving in the city in stop and go can be a pain as shifting is a bit more difficult and is substantially shorter. There is a more profound notchy feel to the shifter after I gave it a few miles to "break in." I have yet to find a time where I needed faster shifting because my shifts were slower than the engine dropping in RPM; this includes when I am being extremely lazy and slow to change gears. Why waste the money for marginal performance increases?

As for "wasting" money, I did that when I bought the Porsche.
I think the only logical response to that is....touché my friend
I do think the new bushings with the in-cabin will help some. Let us know what you find
So?! What is the verdict....how do you like the B&M SSK?

I switched the pivot to the 30% reduction, and though not really a chore, it was a bit more time than I thought it would be, a good 1/2 hour. I drove the car to work and last night I switched it back to 15%. 30%, for me, was way too notchy/difficult to get into first, and the 1-2 was not smooth enough, even after warmed up. I can easily see where, on a track car, where 1, 1-2 is rare, it would be prefered, but for me as a mostly street car use, no thanks. Again, I have the 997 shifter and shorter shift ****, and was pretty pleased with just that, a HUGE improvement over the stock combo. This just made it near perfect for really chump change.

B&M SSK complete - What a difference
Successfully installed the B&M SSK (thank you Rotary Rocket for the parts and expertise)! Absolutely love the shorter throws and the "like new" feel of my shifts now. I cannot imagine going back.
This is definitely tied for best inexpensive mod IMHO right there with the Fister Exhaust. The car sounds great and now it shifts like it should.
The biggest cost is going to be the amount of gas I burn driving my "like new" car!
