A plume of white smoke

Hi,
I just bought my 2001 996 Car 4 Tiptronic three days ago after having it checked by a Porsche dealer (and they found no problems).

I received it three days ago excitedly and on day one the check engine light came on, on day two it started sputtering at lights with a low idle and on day three, when driving on the highway, a huge amount of white smoke started pouring out of the exhausts. It was so much smoke that I decided to flat bed it to a independent shop. When the smoke happened, the engine didn't sound strange, the oil pressure and temperature were fine. In fact, it was accelerating nicely.

I am so worried that the engine is wrecked... any insight into what this might be?

Thanks in advance!!

oh jeez, sorry about your luck. I too just bought a 996 C2 (today actually). White smoke I think means you have oil leaking into the combustion chamber. Hope all gets fixed and she gets better.

If the smoke is from both exhausts it could be the AOS, which is not fatal. Your indy should be able to tell. You did the right thing by flatbedding it to ths shop.

Thanks for the condolences! The smoke was largely from the left exhaust but came from both.

I'm guessing it's most likely your AOS. It's a common issue, and it's not an expensive repair. Good luck!

Can't really say what it is BUT if it's the AOS, your tranny needs to be dropped. Being a tip, there just isn't enough space.

Just got back from the shop. Oil all over throttle body so he believes the AOS is blown. According to the tech there are two ways on the tiptronic car4's to replace the AOS: going through the engine (removing manifold) or taking out the tip. The engine route bill comes to $1200. The tip route costs $2000 (more labor) but they can swap out the RMS, IMS, IMS bearing when they do this. I'm going the tip route. Total cost $2700 (including LN bearing). I'm actually relieved cause I feared a blown engine. It will be good to have all of these items addressed in any case. Any one have suggestions on other things to address with the tip out?

How many miles are on the car? If it hasn't had the 60K mile major done yet you might as well do all of it now while the transmission is already out.

Denversteve,
83k now. It had a 60k according to the paperwork with the car. The tranny fluid has also been changed... What items were you thinking?
Thanks!

In my opinion, you're doing the right thing by doing the IMS, RMS, and AOS together.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Wyovino. I am hoping I am taking the right route! BTW I am using Auto Engineering in Lexington MA. The guy there says he does IMS bearing replacements all the time...

Car is back after its surgery! AOS, IMS,IMS bearing and RMS replaced. Its comforting knowing they are all done. Since so much oil got in the system my tech said to drive it easy for 1 week to not hurt the cats...

Thanks for all the responses and support!

Things happen for a reason! It's good you replaced ims/rms too! You now have peace of mind!

I still need to do that on mine but waiting until the clutch needs replacement... Hope It's not too much of a gamble at 99K miles...
