I'm so envious of all you guys having your tailights installed! I ordered mine more than a month ago and they're still not here. Frank is having an issue with USPS holding the package at a New York depot but blaming DHL for it. It's crazy! In the meantime, all I can do is enjoy your photos

I must admit, I've had these LEDs on my car for a few weeks, and, although I love them, I was starting to question whether they looked OEM or not, since I hadn't seen a 997.2 in person recently. Well, I saw a 997.2 yesterday in a parking lot, and I was shocked just how similar these Dectane lights look to the 997.2 OEMs. Of course, the actual shape of the light is different, but it would likely take a very keen eye from a Porschephile to notice the differences.

Great buy!

These really modernize the 996s. I think from a side view and front view they already look damn good for 8-13 year old cars. These plus LED 3rd brake lights will round it out. The eBay seller shows 5 day turnaround for $599. That is my lean.

On the inside I think the Double Din BT/nav/iPod head unit and aluminum trim helps breath life into that older style interior. Alcantara seems to help too.

I MIGHT go as far to say that a 996 with these Dectane LEDs has the best looking rear end of the water-cooled generations, since the taillights are even with the trunk lines.

Adding the LED 3rd brake light does complete the package. I personally went with the red LED 3rd brake lights, because I thought the clear version wouldn't look as good on my black car. The 3rd brake light on the 997 is integrated more than the 996, so clear works in that case, IMO.

For some reason I prefer the larger slats of the the 997 spoiler. It looks beefier to me. I picked up a used 996 spoiler and was going to have it painted Satin Black. Not sure if will look good on my Silver 996. I may Plasti Dip it first to test out the look. It should recall the look of the older air cooled 911s that had black engine grills. If the wheels were done in black along with the spoiler it would probably tie together nicely.

Am I being too cheap by only replacing the body mounted 3rd brake light with LED and deleting the spoiler one? I was looking to save $100 ha ha and I figure my spoiler is rarely deployed.

I went with the smoked LED 3rd brake lights for my black car and they look great. I returned the clear LED 3rd brake lights since they did not look that good on my car and got the smoked ones instead. I personally think that clear ones would look great on a silver or white car.

The following are the lighting upgrades for my black 996 that I have done/will be doing in the next few weeks. I will post pictures when done.

1-LED Headlights (Chrome/Clear)
2-6000K Slim Canbus HID Kit for Low Beam
3-6000K Slim Canbus HID Kit for High Beam
4-6000K Slim Canbus HID Kit for Fog Light
5-LED Trunk 3rd Brake Light (Smoked)
6-LED Wing 3rd Brake Light (Smoked)
7-LED Dectane Taillights (Red/Clear)
8-Crystal Clear Side Markers (Clear like the 997s)
9-LED Bulbs for the Side Markers (Amber when on and Clear/White when off)
10-LED License Plate Lights

Zeeee - I'm going to be bugging you soon to get the good info. Any recommendations on where to get the clear 3rd LED? I see an ebay seller but is there a preferred vendor? I want to get the marker lights too. I did the HID install quick for my headlights but want to go back and run the wires professionally and in a loom. I left the dust caps off too instead of drilling them to pass the wires through. I'll probably just drill them and put a grommet in. I want everything to look stock.

I personally think you should replace your wing brake light if you drive on the freeway often. The wing deploys I believe at 75mph and retracts at 55mph (experts please correct me if I am wrong). Only one 3rd brake light works at a time, either the trunk or wing, not both.
