00 996,29k miles, lowered 1",tires just all balanced. I am experiencing a wobble or floating feeling at highway speed. This is a new issue. It was very solid up to 135. Now if I move steering wheel back and forth seems a little squirrely,almost like I have a trailor behind me in tow. Curious any thoughts? Thx.

 

stock suspension? sounds normal....

 

I've owned three Porsches - all with stock suspensions and never felt that feeling at any speed anywhere. Something's not right.

 

What kind of tires? If you put a tire on that doesn't have an XL rated(stiff) sidewall, the rear end will float side to side..

 

If you do a search... There are plenty guys who have this floaty feeling in the front. Depending on mileage, type of suspension ( touring, sports, track... Yet, these can all be stock), ride height and aerodynamics.... I'm referring to the standard suspension that floats on fast straight highway speeds.... Sometimes you feel it on certain roads, not all the time but it's there. Some more than others. I've had that floaty feel and got rid of it by a front spoiler, and got rid of it even more with bilsteins.... So, floaty to some maybe good with others.

But, reading closer, wobbly? That's a new one.... Better check for loos bolts down there. See if your anti roll bars are on tight.

 

Hey man. I got the same issue and my problem is the tires. front are diffrent from rear and the front ones are way over aged so they dont grib and float from side to side on high speeds. How old are your front ones?

 

4 yrs old plenty of tread, general ump up front 235/35/19 went wider in rear then previous tire 285/30/19 hankook v12's. General didn't make that size, tread pattern very similar v design. In past never put 45 psi in rear, always 34. Read somewhere that 45 is recommended. Going to lower to 38psi and see if that changes anything. Car tracked very well at 34 rear in past, will check back.

 

I have a 00 996 with over 100k miles on it, it definitely also has the floating feeling where the front end doesn't feel grounded. From what i understand this is a very common thing on Porches from 1998 to 2010. One of the things they got rid of completely on the new 991 is this exact feeling.

 

Kiya, that going to be an expensive fix. Will buy a 991 sometime in the future.

 

Kiya, the front end float is due to raised suspension in the US to meet minimum height requirement. easy fix with ROW M030 suspension change.

i think JW996's issue is with his tire/wheel size and inflation. Try original setup to see what happens. i would not change wheel / tire size on 911. also stick with N rated tires. i wouldn't put a general tire on a performance car.

But when i look up the ROW M030 kit it looks to be only for 2002 to 2005 models.

 

JW - Letting pressure out of the rear tires is going to make it worse. Run 40psi in the rears on the street and you'll get used to it. I have the same tires and they are just not stiff enough for good high speed stability on a rear engined 911... On another note, it's gotten better with 1k on the tires. For what they cost, I'd get them again.

 

I lowered pressure in rear to 38 and kept 34 up front, the twitchy feeling diminished considerably. Car felt heavy again,the walking or disconnect from the rear, left. Still going to dealer for previously mentioned investigation and work.thx for all input.

 

Lowering the car changed your suspension geometry. I went with a whole M030 (Springs, Struts, Sway Bars and Bushings) and have no issues. Fastest I have got her is @162mph and she had no issues.

 

Tires or maybe alignment. When I had my NA 996 I got a GT3 bumper and that solved things.
