Help: 2003 996 Stereo Question?
I had my 911 in for service at my local Porsche dealer and had them take a look at my stereo as I thought it required a code (after a battery replacement it hadn't worked since). They informed me that I need a new radio receiver. My car is a 2003 Cabriolet with the CDR 23, Bose package and 6 Disc Changer in the front.
I would like to sell the car so I don't want to spend too much money (factory replacement cost is $900!) and I am not a car stereo guy. What are my options?
Thanks for any help!
Eric

does the head unit power up and display any code request? i think that is what happens when you turn on the head unit after a power change.
if it's indeed faulty, you can get a used CDR 23 with a code on ebay, craigslist or on the forums. make sure it isn't the older CDR 220. before 2003, the stereo system uses different connectivity (not MOST).

It intermittently powers up and displays PORSCHE on the screen and then powers down.
When you say 'code' what do you mean? I have seen a couple of units (CDR 23) on Ebay, in addition to the unit I need to have a code as well?
I love Porsche but they sure don't make things easy!

these may help you. looks like pulling the radio fuses resets the head unit

You can certainly put in an aftermarket system for less. That said, I have seen almost continuous availability of used Porsche stereo units. Check also with the dismantlers.

It sounds like you may not know your code. Try here http://www.renntech.org/forums/topic...-request-here/

The CDR23 (model year 2003) is the first year that doesn't need a code.
They can be tempermental. The symptoms you're experiencing can sometimes be resolved by removing and replacing the fuse. Try reseating the connections. The head unit actually communicates with the amp. If a connection isn't perfect this can cause problems. Try disconnecting the cd changer and see if it will boot.
Fyi, you can avoid a lot of this if you will manually turn off the radio before you turn off the car.
