Built 996 M96 Engine for FI?
can you give me more details on the ductile cylinder liners?
I have read quite a bit on them and they are supposed to be really good but I keep getting concerned about expansion rate between the aluminum case and iron cylinder liners.... slipped liners ect....
The rover V8 has a pretty good track record of slipped liners in there aluminum block V8.
Did you look at the Nikasil liners from LNE?
Also, what pistons will work work with these cylinders ?
Another thing, where did you get your oil feed from .

The failure in the 996 Cylinder Linings is caused by over heating. I had my cylinders dye and leak checked, then upgraded to a GT3 3rd Radiator and a 160 Degree Thermostat. Even in 115 degree AZ temp and running my car extremely hard, I haven't seen the temp go over 200F. And im only running 5.5psi, so im good on pressure and heat.
Stephan, thanks for the reply.
Crack testing the cylinders is actually a good idea VS just changing them. The other major problem "from what I read on the web" with the standard M96 cylinders is that the cylinders go oval .
I didn't read your complete build but I remeber reading that you installed new piston rings. I was under the impression that the Locasil cylinders were seriously difficult to hone for new rings, something to do with the silicone crystals in the cylinder linings if I remember correctly. You pretty much have to hone the cylinders for the new rings to seat properly. How did they get around this on your engine.
Do you have any oil consumption problems ? It is good to see how hard your 996 is driven and still runs perfect. It makes me wonder what some of these shops that specialize in the after market rebuilding of the M96 are talking about!!
I would still like to get more info on the Ductile cylinders if anybody has any info on them or if the original poster can share some info.

Waiting on my pistons to come in from arias, hopefuly should be completed the end of this comming week. I had also ordered up an x51 intake manifold 2wks ago and it already came in, but when we mounted it up to my factory lower intake manifold runners but the ports didnt line up right since the x51 has slightly larger ports so i just ordered up the x51 lower halfs this past Thursday.
Oh an I got in my Garrett GT4094r

Also, please tell me more on the ductile cylinders and there reliability in the aluminum M96 case.
HM1 you jinxed me with that last post about good progress!! lol
It's been a while since Ive updated this post but we had a few "hickups". Kind of my own fault but im glad it all worked out. We had to redesign some pistons but all the guess work was taken out when we sent in a set of heads to measure out the volume of cc in the heads and head gaskets and get the valve clearances so that the pistons work be exact on the C/R.
In a way it would of been a heck of alot easier to just stick with a 3.4l 96mm piston because we could just scan that piston use the current stock c/r #'s to figure out the correct dish to get 9.0:1 but thats all behind me now.
The car is now in CA with its powerplant and over the next few week it will get the fuel system installed and I will get the lsd and clutch all taken care off. I am still up in the air if i am going to change out the ring and pinion and go to a 3.00 ratio but im sure I will be making a decision soon.
I did get my seats and roll bar so I was pretty excited about thoes so I will share some pictures even though they have nothing to do with the engine build : )

Well it been about 3 months since I've updated my poor lil build. To be honest not much has realy changed but I did realize that I never posted pictures of my block with sleeves installed and grooved for o-rings. I am down to needing to port my heads, build a set of 4-cams, and coating a set of main bearings to get this block complete to put back in the car.
