K&N Airfilters

Sorry but not able to search the website under this listing. Wonder if it makes sense to change the stock airfilter to K&N type. Have seen various comments about exhaust systems lately, but looking for a cheaper solution to a little better sound and possible (?) HP increase.

Comments, opinions please?

according to a very good 996tt owner source, K&N filters are nothing much. Search on DavidA's K&N thread on Funcars.

Matt, BMC filter is another popular choice, I have heard some negative feedback on any of these filters can trigger off the mass air flow sensor and some people say they have no problems at all, look into it more.

Someone tested the 996TT K&N vs a new OEM paper filter on one of the 996 forums a few months ago. He hooked up a shop vac to his filter housing that was out of the car. He had an ultra sensitive flow meter or pressure drop gauge to compare the filter elements. The K&N flowed a very small amount LESS than the stock paper element. The difference was probably insignificant. The original filter is excellent, lots of surface area. However the K&N can be washed and re-used for years. Any filter that flows more than the stock filter would probably let more dirt particles through.
You do gain 1% power for every 7 degrees F. that you reduce the air temp at the intake.
