What motor oil do you use?

I recently got the "Check engine oil level" upon start up and I started thinking..."What kind of oil should I be using?"

Anyway, if I could get any input from the 6speeders, that'd be great. It's just a 3.6 C2.

I have always heard that Mobil 1 is great, but which mixture?

Thanks alot!

(Last thing, I tried searching...couldn't find anything. Sorry.)

I have a 2001 C2, which is not the same engine as yours, but my dealer uses only 0W-40, which is what the car is delivered with from the factory (at least it was in 2001).

My owners' manual lists other viscosities, depending on whether you're driving in temperatures generally above or below 50 deg Fahrenheit. Nonetheless, 10W-40 is listed as acceptable in any temperature range for my car (and 0W-40 is not listed at all for any temperature -- go figure). Check your manual to see if it's different on your car.

See, I would go check the owners manual....if I had one. The car was bought used and I have been looking all of my info up online since the purchase.

I live in humid southwest florida. I don't think I have to worry about anything under 50* F.

Hmm...any other input?

Thanks for the help.

Manual and Oil

Go here for the owner's manual. 29 mb. Download it. The page number is corresponding to the page number in the manual so index is great. I can't remember where I got this from.

Mobil 1 0w40 is a great oil and it's factory recommended. I've been using it on all my cars since it was available. That is about the past 10 years I think. The 0W rating is a special rating. It's actually rated for all temperature. In my BMW manual has the oil listed as 0Wxx and it cover the whole range way on the left. It's a extreme formula.

I stopped using it recently. 1. Can't find them off the shelf anymore. 2. Talk to a guy at Autozone on why they stop carrying them. He told me that they got notify from Mobil to "DO NOT SELL THEM" BUT "POUR THEM OUT". So they had to pour all their inventory into the recycling container. He said that he hear that there was several batches had water in them and caused many engine failures. That is very disturbing to me.

My E39 M5 recommends 10w60. In theory, the thicker the oil, the better the film strength. Porsche manual states 10w40 or greater, so unless you live in the north, go with 15w50 and 5w30 in the winter. IMHO.

I use 15w-50 in the summer (we are currently in the high 90's to 100 degrees) and back to 0w40 in the winter (high 20's low 30's). Seems to work well.

I would definitely buy an owners' manual from the dealer. Lots of useful information in there. BTW, there's a separate one for the radio as well.
