HVAC controls

My HVAC, if set on "auto", seems to be getting its temperature signal from some other planet. For example - its about 40 deg F this morning. Driving to work, to keep the darn thing from parboiling me I had to set it all the way down on the temp control to "lo" then its blowing what seems like straight A/C. Turning the temp up even to the lowest temp setting, 64F I think, results in nothing but full on hot air if set on "auto"

If I drive the car for an hour or so, it seems to settle down and put our reasonable temp air based on a reasonable setting, like 69 or 70.

Any thoughts? Is this how yalls behaves? I searched the forum for similar complaints and couldn't find anything.
