Will a 2005 rim/tires fit on a 2002 narrow body?

I have a narrow body 2002 with 18" and was looking to buy a 2005 18" wheel/tire combo.
Will this fit?
2005
Wheels

Rear: 18x10 58 offset

Tires
Front: 235/40 r18
Rear: 265/40 r18

2002

Tires
Front: 225 40 r18
Rear:285 30 r18

Thanks in advance

Not what I'm seeing...

I have the same 997 wheel/tire combo I'm test fitting on my 2004 996 C2 in the garage right now.

987 Rear Wheels (10x18 RO 58) & tires (265/40-18):

The rear 997 wheels are 7mm less offset than the 996 wheels (10x18 RO 65), pushing the wheels outwards towards the fenders. This is the same as using a 7mm spacer in the rear with the original wheels, which should work fine.

The bigger issue is that the 997 tires are significantly taller (~26.3") than the oem 996 285/30-18 (24.7") and 265/30-18 (25.3") tires. And while the wheel/tire combo stuffs the rear wheel well nicely and looks cool, two possible issues:
  • It may cause PSM and ABS errors because of the front/rear tire diameter difference. OEM 996 tire sizes are about the same diameter front to rear, within 2%. The tall 997 rear bumps it up to almost 4% difference. From what I've read, the abs/psm computers on 986's and 996's expect front/rear tire sizes to be the same, and 987/997 computers expect some front/rear tire size stagger. Deviating too far from what the computer expects evidently trips fault lights and/or screws up the automatic intervention slightly.
  • Even on my stock ride height 996, this thing takes up some wheel well room. I'm not sure that at full compression, everything will clear in the rear.
I think that the OEM 285/35-18 will work great on the 997 wheel, but the rear 997 tire I'm thinking isn't going to work. I also think that a 295/35-18, commonly fitted on the stock wheels, just might be a bit too wide on the less offset 997 wheels. Very close.

987 Front Wheels (8x18 RO 57) & tires (235/40-18):

Front 997 setup is just the opposite... The tires should be great. Just slightly taller and wider the oem 225/40-18's, but not as wide as the 245/35-18's that are often fit on 996's. The problem is the wheels... They have 7mm *more* offset than the stock OEM wheels, pushing them in the wrong direction, inwards. I'm test fitting mine with some 5mm spacers, but they are still rubbing somewhere. I need to inspect a bit closer and see where it is rubbing, but I'm pretty sure going with a larger 14mm spacer will fix the problem.

So while I haven't finished testing everything, these are my preliminary conclusions on using NB 997 wheel/tires on a NB 996:
  • 997 rear wheels are great. Better than 996 wheels with 7mm push which looks better and probably handles better.
  • 997 rear tires are probably a no-go (too tall) and will probably need to be replaced with a 285/30 or 295/30. Still evaluating, but at this point I think it's wishful thinking on my part that the 997 rear tires will work.
  • 997 front tires are great. Better than stock 996 tires as they are a bit wider and will cut down on understeer with a bit more front grip.
  • 997 front wheels are no-go without spacers with any size tires, but with 14mm spacers, they should work great.

Sorry I misunderstood the OP, I thought he wanted to use his 2002 tires on the 2005 rims which would've been fine.

I don't think the 997 front rims will work without spacers, even with narrower 225/40's. They just have too much offset...

They'll work. I use to run 997 lobster forks with the same front offsets.

Thanks for all the feedback guys, especially pfbz. Based on what you said it sounds like there may be issues and that is not something I want to tackle. My 996 has been lowered (by springs) and that may present more problems too.
Thanks again!!

Do a search and you'll find many that run 997 wheels without issues, theories aside...

I'm using NB Carrera III wheels from a 997 with my 996 tire sizes with no problems etc - no spacers, nothing needed. No rubbing. Looks great and car handles great - no PSM or ABS issues whatsoever. There are literally dozens of people on this board and others who've done the same thing.

So it sounds like the rims may not be an issue, just matching them to the correct tires.

Ding Ding, that's what I've been saying the whole time but some newbs just don't like to take free advice the first time around. I'm out...

Sounds like others are running the 18x8 RO 57 997 front wheels with the stock 996 front tire size (225/40) without issue... I assumed they would not clear, as they rub with 235/40's rub even with a 5mm spacer.

But you can see in the picture how inset they are... Lots of people like to add a 7mm or 14mm spacer to the front even with the lower offset 996 fronts, and the 997 wheels go 7mm in the wrong direction. I really like the 997 Carrera III wheels... So much so that I bought a set. But no way I personally would run the fronts without spacers.

997 front wheels on a 996 without spacers = highly inset wheels.

No mention of tires, you just said it would work. Which was incorrect. But hey, thanks for the newbie crack...

There was a CL ad in the SF Bay Area for $1000 for the whole set of 997 rims with tires but the seller told me it was already sold when I contacted him yesterday..did you happen to buy them? If so, I think you got a great deal!

I saw the CL ad and that is why I asked the question. I need new tires so I thought to go this route.
I guess I may be too late, bur that's ok.
