Quick question on a Cabrio top repair.

Hey guys... quick question on my 2000 996 Cab.
I have a messed up rear window that is torn along the bottom and currently it is glued shut. I got insurance money to repair it but I was looking at ebay and suddenly there seem to be a ton of complete tops.. canvas, interiors, arms, hydraulics etc.. down to the mounts into the chassis for $1000 off of wrecked 996s.

Would this be a viable alternative to spending a few grand+ on just canvas and install?

I'm in Northern Virginia and am limited in the peeps that actually do the canvas repair type of work (just one in the area).

Based on what I see, I think I can install this and reconnect it all up -vs- attempting to do the canvas myself, over a 2-3 day period.

Anyone ever try this?

Thanks!

Bill

From what I've read, this is absolutely NOT a DIY job. A top off a wrecked 996 is still going to be a lot older than a new top. I've read of people having genuine German A5 canvas (same as OEM) installed for less than $2k. That's the way I'll be going next year.

Actually Bill, almost every marine shop in the NV area is capable of handling the rear window. About your other question... you will get what you pay for... and have to live with it for years. Your call. I would go with a new factory-quality top.

Yeah... But they can't handle removing/replacing the top. And the only recommended place is 3500 or so.

I'll check around a bit more.

I went with this top on Ebay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/PORSCHE-911-...d7e6d6&vxp=mtr

And then had my local upholstery shop install it. I believe they charged me $900 for the install. 9 hours @ $100/hour.

I love it. Great quality and the glass window is a big improvement over the old faded and worn plastic one.

Wow... So about $1500 total??? No leaks or anything?... Gonna start looking for a real upholstery shop then!
