Sunroof screeching - screaming!

My sunroof works just fine. It opens and closes with no problem at all EXCEPT that when it opens and closes there's this annoying screeching/screaming sound

I tried listening in closely where the screeching noise was coming from but it seem like it's everywhere (sides and back). So do you guys know where I can apply a little of WD-40 or white lithium grease perhaps to stop this? I don't know where to do it. Maybe someone can point...

Do I have to take off the headliner to access the parts I need to lube? How do I take out the headliner? Anyone who can share their experience? Thanks!

I'm no expert but it sounds like the motor not a lube issue.

I think the proper lube is Dupont Krytox. Lithium grease will make a huge mess. Be aware Krytox is $$ per tablespoon.

You know what, you may be right. I borrowed a stethoscope and found out that the noise is coming from the front part of the sunroof. The motor is there right? So do I dismantle and lube it? Or buy a new motor? Is it the sign that the motor will soon pass away?

@ditto - thanks for that info.

@saibot - thats sad. I won't be able to survive without a sunroof. Have you tried looking for a used complete sunroof assembly on ebay? It will save you a lot of pain. Just buy it and snap it on. Just my 2 cents.

do u have a diy step by step how to get to the sunroof motor so that I can lube it?

First, the A, B and C pillars (OK), then the usual clips, torx, etc - but there is a gasket and/or lip that stretches the headliner into the opening, and that has some strange arrangement that I only can guess releases tension when the other parts are disconnected. It is a rigid plastic ring that is on the inside lip. But wait - the best part is that you have to remove the sunroof to get to the back edge of the ring to disconnect, and here is where it gets nasty, with all sorts of warnings about damaging the roof drains, inner panel, inner side panels, aligning - 1mm in front and + 1mm in back and 0.5mm gap, etc.

I need to find someone in Orange County that has experience in doing this - I don't think I want to learn on my car!

I got lost reading his post about removing the sunroof around the lip/gasket part... from what i saw, the headliner seems to be actually glued to the assembly. Anyways, You wont actually need to remove the sunroof to access the motor.

Just remove all the pillar trims, and you'll see small hooks glued onto the aluminum frame of the car hooking onto one long metal rod (thinner than a pencil) that's threaded through little holes in the headliner (one on each side) - this is hidden under the pillars... just kinda stretch the headliner enough to unhook each metal rod from the hooks.. then you'r headliner will droop down, only attached at the middle to the sunroof assembly frame.

You should be able to see the motor now

great stuff! will do this soon and take some pictures when i get the headliner off. i noticed there are no pictures online showing us what to expect.

another follow up question would be - when I finally see the motor, would I know where to lube it? are there holes on it that says 'put oil here'? do i use the krytox or sprayable lithium grease will do? or do i just get a new motor since I'm already there?

It looks like the motor is item #2 in your diagram above.

I think this article will suffice and give me the confidence to replace the motor by myself. Thanks again! Will update this thread When I finish replacing the motor. Got a good deal with a used sunroof motor off ebay for only $120 bucks!
