How to remove the front dash speakers on 01 996?
I did this a couple of years ago, so I may be a bit rusty. The speakers are attached to the back of the speaker grills, which are then dropped in place and held down with a few torx screws. You will need a torx driver set -- the kind that comes with different torx bits that you silde into the handler. The rear screws are easy -- just unscrew. The front ones are so close to the windshield that you won't be able to get the whole driver in there. So, what you do is put the bit in place, then press down with one hand while turning the bit with a small ajustable wrench. Once it's loosened up, just use your fingers to finish the job.
After you've removed the speaker/grill assembly, you'll notice that standard 4" speakers will not fit on the Porsche speaker grill unless you cut up you old Porsche speaker and use them as mounting tempates, which is what I did. Let me know if you need info on how to do that.

speakers in 996
Oggie,
any more tips on demounting/mounting the dash speakers on the 996 would be appreciated!
I just realized that standard 4-inchers dont fit, and mounting my new set of speakers is more complicated than I thought...
Looks to me that either I´ll have to cut the stock speakers to pieces and use the parts, or fabricate a whole new backing plate + cover/grill.
Any other way?

brgs,
I unscrewed the 2 screws, but the speaker grill doesn't
wanna lift out of the dash. It's like something is holding it back.
I thought after removing the 2 screws you just pick up the assembly and lift it out, but it doesn't look that way.
Is there something from the bottom holding the speakers?

I don't think so. Maybe it's caked on there? Try a little prying. Anyone with a parts diagram can confirm that there is no hidden clip holding the grille to the dash.

There's definitely no clip holding it there. It could be some baked on rubber or something. There may be a little tab at the front, so try lifting up the rear first. If you still can't get it out, experiment with the rear side speakers. They mount the same way and are easier to get at.

thanks for the picture. It helped a lot.
I was trying to pull from the big side before seeing the picture. What a disaster that would have been..
I had to use a bigger flat screw driver and give it a nice pull. It came off easily. I added some dynamat to the underside to reduce any rattles the vibration might cause.
It sounds perfect.
