Exhaust upgrade on 996 C2. Any tips ?

I have a stock 996 C2 that exhaust are in need of change due to wear etc. I would like to seize the moment and update the mufflers. I wouldn't like to much noise as its my daily driver but some . . . I also don't want to spend a fortune
Any ideas ?

If you don't have to change out the mufflers go for Fisters/PSE Hack. If you need to change try SpeedTech, Fabspeed or MaxSpeed out of Canada.

Your best bet (if you dont want to spend a fortune) is to get OEM and do the Fister/PSE Hack. I have a set of OEM mufflers if you're interested PM me - I'll give you a good deal. As far as sound, I replaced my OEM for fabspeed, if you're concerned about loudness, I would advise you stay OEM - I'm even thinking of switching back. You can find OEM for much cheaper than aftermarket on eBay. If price isn't an issue, then I'm sure there are a bunch of different combinations out there to suit your needs.

Go to an indy or muffler shop, show them the pic and say "do this."

The fister is a nice inexpensive fix and its rare to find an inexpensive fix for a P Car, but if you need new mufflers check out fabspeed Maxflo they are stainless Steel and made very well, they also provide a nice sound. I put them on my 1999 C2 and they really give it that little bit more... I love them.

Welcome to the fun of upgrading your P Car....haha

Mixed emotions. I have upgraded many OEM parts for aftermarket modifications and swapped them out. What I highly suggest, to keep this short and pcar fast, try or just be an audience/crowd/bystander at a track event and listen to what tickles your fancy. Why? As I said prior, I went with a low key, affordable exhaust, but after a few seasons and after a few track sessions, I went ahead and swapped out my aftermarket Exhaust system for a Formula 1 set up, because people change. On that note, I learned, if you were going to upgrade any OEM parts, I learned my lesson the expensive way, and my suggestion is to make your first decision your last, high quality decision. Go big the first time, rather than always having to swap out for the next best thing.

Hope this helps,
Marc

Hi all. Again, thanks for the input - it really helps.
I am planning on checking the mufflers out next monday, deciding on next steps as i see how they are (rusty etc.)
I would like to take them off myself - is that a simple job or ?

Ok so i took the mufflers off today. As suspected they are done / AKA rusted without the option to get them fixed. That leaves me now with some options.

To get new OEM ones and do the gundo hack,
Get the fabspeed / similar,
Muffler delete,
Getting something custom made at a indy muffler shop.
Any ideas / suggestions ?

Btw. When i drove it from the lift it had very nice sound when idling but as soon as i started driving it was LOUD so muffler delete is out of the question i think.

The good thing about this whole process is that i am also getting the spark plugs changed cause of the easy access to it now.

Yes, muffler delete is loud and I don't suggest it. Check out MaxSpeed out of Canada or Speed Tech, both good

You could also check DC Auto to see if they have any used ones.

So - just got her today after installing the new exhaust system.
As the old mufflers were rusty and shipping stuff to Iceland is SO expensive i talked to one of the most experienced welding / exhaust guy there is here is Reykjavik, Iceland. Been in the biz for 25+ years with many great mods in his belt. We decided after surfing the net to do hollow stainless power mufflers and x-pipe. And what a difference i felt when driving from his shop! It does sound mild but as soon after it hits 3500+ rpm it gets throaty (but not too deep). Its just the way i think i always wanted it to sound.
So - before i did the longer way to work, now i´ll do the extra long way to work, ha ha.
Just feels great and im happy with it.
And as the sun is shining today i washed the princess with a big smile
