Prices
Asking price and actual sales price can be worlds apart. Anyone buying a 996 today better be buying it to enjoy it for the long haul because you are more than likely not going to be happy with what you get offered in trade 3 years from now. I paid $27,500 for my 2002 Targa w/62k miles a year ago. Trade in today I'd be lucky to see $20k. So I may as well drive the crap out of her and enjoy it. Fives years from now with over 100k miles I'll still likely get close to $15k in trade. Once the price drops to $10k you may as well part it out cuz you'll always be able to re-coup at least $5k for the engine.
I absolutely disagree with this...

I agree, a manual cab C4S is getting hard to find
I had been looking for a C4S manual cab for a while. Seems prices have been appreciating. I didn't by it for that reason, but it's good to know.
This thread makes me happy, it will be nice to even break even on a car at one point. I'm really loving my 996 aero car, so won't be thinking about selling for a long time, or ever...but we'll see. Took a bath on two used Cayenne's an S and Turbo (995 gens). Made a slight profit on my 83' 944, but nothing to write home about. It was basically a free car, the profit covered my insurance, plate/title fee's and most of the gas I used for the year in the car.
I just bought my 2001 C2 let me know how good of a deal you feel I got, details below:
Price: $17,500
Miles: 109,700
Color: Silver
Exterior: 9/10 for a 13 year old car
Interior: 8.5/10 for a 13 year old car
Options: Premium audio, heated seats, litronic headlights, headlight washers, M030, Alcantara Headliner, 3 spoke wheel, PASM, 18" Turbo Twist II wheels, aluminum instrument dials, aluminim & leather ebrake handle, alumnimum shift ****, metal door sills with insignia.
Mods: Tacky Agency Power muffler, aftermarket bluetooth/usb/ipod compatible receiver, +1 width tires.
Maintenance: 3k miles on tires. 4k miles on water pump, tstat, and coolant flush. Trans fluid flushed 7k miles ago. Serpentine belt done 9k miles ago. Clutch, LM Enginnering IMS upgrade, RMS, 13k miles ago. Brakes are probably about 65% to 75% through their life.
Let me know if you think this was a solid deal, or not so great. I looked around and did not see any cars which were anywhere near as clean or which had anywhere as much recent maintenance as this one did for under $20,000. I don't love the tacky exhaust but it does very accurately tell me throttle position and is fun when pulling from 4000 to redline. The car is super tight with almost no rattles and only the tiniest amount of wind noise becoming audible at 75mph and higher.

That sounds like a solid deal to me. Nearly a year ago I bought my '00 C2 Cab with 100K on the clock for 19K. It is in very good condition overall, with service records, but no record of the LN IMS upgrade. It doesn't have some of the options yours does, but does have the removable hard top which is a big bonus in my opinion. Since I bought the car I have put 7K miles on it and have replaced the accessory belt and water pump (my fault, botched downshift threw the belt and bent the water pump shaft), and just a few days ago I dropped the car off at the shop for a proactive RMS/IMS/AOS job. I might not have gotten the "best" deal for my 996 but so far I'm very happy with my purchase.
pgvinter ,
You got a fantastic deal. For me that amount of mileage scared me when I was looking but now that I have done all my research and gained some knowledge, wish I found a car with the upgrades yours has. I ended up getting an 02 targa with 51k miles for $32k. Just for S***s and giggles I decided to go to Ford and they would only offer me 19k for the car yet I had a crowd around the car asking if It was for sale.
I think the 996 will eventually go up but its going to be an extremely slow process and dealers will only do like 60ish % of what the car is worth if you decide to go that route.

I'll be very happy if the value stays flat or goes down less than $1000 per year. I bought it hoping that it would still be worth around $15,000 in three years time with about 125,000 to 130,000 miles on it. Having gone through this thread I think that is a reasonable or even somewhat conservative assumption and that there is more room for a positive rather than a negative surprise from there.
There were three things that drove me to buy the car
1. The M3 wasn't getting driven that much any more. It's faster than my 330 but not by such an overwhelming amount and it is only fun to drive when you drive it hard. It has 180,000 miles on it, the headliner is sagging and the car is noisy and shows its age to a degree. I wanted a car that I would be faster and that would be a bit nicer than the old E36 M3 which would make me want to drive it as much as or more than the 330. The 996 fits both bills.
2. The M3 needs some maintenance and while the parts cost is somewhere around $350-500 all in with labor it's closer to $2500 to $3000. It will also need tires sooner than later. The 996 looks up to date with the only things coming up being the 120k maintenance about a year and a half to two years down the road and possibly brakes. The overall cost of maintenance for the 996 looks significantly lower over the next two to three years when compared to the E36 which will need about $2500 to $3000 immediately and than about $1500+ per year given age and BMW "wear items."
3. The 911 seemed like it should only depreciate about $1000 or so per year if I only put 5000 to 6000 miles on it, which is roughly half of the driving per year that I am likely to do over the next two or three years. At the same time the E36 seemed pretty much bottomed out but may still depreciate very modestly. Overall I felt like the costs of ownership should be similar or maybe even a tad bit lower for the 996 and it is such a better and more capable car.
Given that 996 prices seem to be coming off the bottom slowly my best case scenario is that I can get back what I paid or maybe even make $1000 to $2500 when I sell the car. The only downside to that is that I would love to replace it with a 996TT or 997 C2S, the 996TT will likely be more expensive as well by that point but the 997 C2S may be a bit cheaper.

Recently got my 996.
99' guards red aero car
Hardback sports seat (red as well)
red seat belts
Bilstein coilovers, H&R sports springs, GT3 sway bars.
Litronic lights
Fabspeed exhaust & headers
I'm sure there are some other things but those are the notable ones.
Not a whole lot of documentation, however a strong carfax, IMS addressed early on 13k miles. PO had about 15 records on top of that.
Picked up in Pa (hour west of Philly), drove home to Michigan, without issues. Paid $18,995 for her. 71,xxx miles when I picked it up, now I'm just shy of 74k, finding the back roads/long way is all too fun.

Just bought my first this past Saturday and it had been on the dealer's lot for a few months. 2004 cabriolet with 60K miles, one previous owner with a clean carfax. Finally settled on a little under $30K. The car is super clean with no leaks underneath whatsoever. I'm beginning to think I stumbled onto a keeper because there are private sellers here in NM asking a LOT more for lesser cars.
Thanks!
