Need quick help on AutoTran filter

1999, 911, C2 . . . changing Tiptronic ATF and the tranny filter. The old filter, looks original, has a molded plastic inlet held in place with a metal strap. The new filter (not Porsche) does not have the plastic inlet/strap. I figured a way to mount the old plastic inlet/strap to the new filter but there is now about 1/8 - 1/4" interference fit between the inlet/strap and the inside surface of the oil pan. The Bentley manual has an assembly sketch that shows the filter mounted and no plastic inlet/strap. Can I eliminate the plastic inlet/strap? I suspect there is no real need for the inlet. Any ideas???

Are you referring to the strap at the front of the filter?

The inlet shouldn't be necessary, since the whole filter should be submerged in fluid.

Hey guys, thanks so much for the feed back. Jay, yes that's the strap. ECS, you are absolutely correct. I will not be using the older plastic/strap inlet.
