Question Brakes and Rotors for 2003 996

Hello Team,

I'm looking to replace my brakes and rotors myself on 2003 996. Its my daily commute car and I also take it on track, few times a year. Which brakes/rotors would you recommend?

Cheers,
Maitrey

Rotors -- Sebro (OEM supplier IIRC)

Pads -- stock or Hawk HPS (what I'm using and am happy with them)

Some hard-core track enthusiasts I know switch pads to a more track-specific compound for track days, then back to street pads for around town.

The HPS is a good pad, you can also use the ceramic with the iron disks.

The package from ECS is a nice one, all 4 rotors, pads, sensors, lube.

- I track 2 to 4 days per year. Otherwise its my daily commute car. Will the package with Mintex pads sufficient for me or should I go with Hawk HPS package?
- Is Mintex pads ceramic? How is the wear with slotted rotors?
- How are Hawk PC pads?
- Among the following pads, which ones rate highest (racing pads) lowest (street driving): Hawk PC, Hawk HPS, Mintex, Pagid RS, Poterfield.

Thanks
Maitrey

I would address your questions to ESC, they are a wealth of knowledge and help.
I will say this; you should not use racing pads for everyday street use, racing pads need a lot of heat to work properly and normal driving won't get them there. This is why people change out the pads on track day.
If it were me ask them which pad has lowest amount of metal.

To answer the questions in order:
  • I would go with the Hawk HPS package. HPS stands for High Performance Street. They are intended for vehicles that primarily see street use, but they do perform better on the track than OE pads.
  • The Mintex pads are not ceramic. They are an organic compound comparable to the OE pads. Slotted rotors will produce very similar wear to the stock cross-drilled rotors.
  • The Hawk Performance Ceramic pads are not as aggressive as the HPS pads. The ceramic compound reduces dust and noise, with a slight increase in braking performance over stock, but not as much bite as the HPS pads.
  • In order of performance: Pagid RS, Hawk HPS, Hawk PC, Mintex. I have no experience with Porterfield pads.
Hope this helps and let us know if you have any other questions or concerns.

so hawk PC is still a stock upgrad on a 996??? I didn't know that. May be a good balance to reduce dust.

why slotted vs stock cross drilled any preference?

Yes the Hawk Performance pads would be a stock upgrade. The slotted rotors tend to last longer for the track guys, as they don't get as much cracking compared to the cross drilled.
