Scrape or Spray

Scrape or Spray
This morning was the coldest day of the year so far in the UK with 0.5 degrees Celsius showing on my dash at 6am. I wondered which is the best way to thaw the car before driving, should i scrape the windows with a plastic scraper or spray de-icer on the glass?

Would not use de-icer, it could/will harm the paint. If it's just frost use cold water (not warm or hot) and use a squeegee. We occasionally get frost and I use the garden hose. Works great for morning dew as well.

Thats was i was thinking with spray but could squeegee or scraper damage/scratch the glass? Also, do you let the car idol for a while on colder weather to let the engine warm up or just start and go?

The squeegee is rubber, do not use hard plastic, find one with a soft rubber blade at the auto parts store. You should not idle warm these cars, start it and drive, keep under 3k RPM's until it starts to warm.

Scrape the glass - it's been done without harm for about 100 years. If it's cold I let the car idle for a couple of minutes before heading out to let things start warming up and fluids get circulated.

Last I heard plastic was softer than glass and as someone pointed out, people have been doing it for 100 years.
What scratches glass the most is wiping dirty windshields that have been covered with sand and dirt/rocks particles. You probably have a higher chance of scratching your glass with your normal windshield wipers on a dirty glass than you do scraping off frost/ice.
This thread is . You must drink bottled water all the time too.

Sorry my friend, rubber will not scrape ice. You need hard plastic and, again, it will not - in any way - damage glass. Ursa, get a proper ice scraper and stop worrying.

My suggestion was for frost or morning dew, not ice. Guess I wasn't clear, but you are correct for ice plastic is best and won't hurt the window.

What do you guys down there know about ice, other than the stuff you put in your liquor?
