Chicktronic Tuning

A while back I saw an ad in Excellence for a chip that adjusts the shifting speed of the tiptronic transmission, but I don't recall the manufacturer. Has anybody heard of this or actually done it. My car is a 99 c2 cab, so it would be nice to have full use of the rpm ranges in 1st gear (porsche cut the shift in 1st ~500 rpm's short of redline) as well as get some extra throttle input response like on later models. If anybody knows or has done this I would be very grateful (yeah, I know i'm a puss for getting a tip but I live in the city).

I was told that the Tiptronic S will learn the way you drive and that it has hundreds of prorgrams that it can apply to your driving style. I'm not sure if you want to mess with the computer like that. . . You might want to look into a super charger instead

The tiptronic system on the 99's is actually just the same one that porsche used on the 99 and earlier boxsters. The Tiptronic "S" wasn't until the displacement bumb, or so I thought. In any event, I'm not sure there were as many shifting algorithms on the standard tiptronic as there are on the newer programs. I thought about the FI route, but it's not exactly cheap (well, cheaper than buying a turbo cab yes).

I did some checking on what you said and here is what I found out... (Compliments of Loren at Renntech.org)

The Tiptronic for the Carrera series changed in MY02.
Up to MY 02 the early Tip was model number A96.00 (for the C2) and A96.30 for the C4.

As of MY02 the later (so called Turbo Tip) was model number A96.50 for both the C2 and C4. These supposedly had the stronger gears and torque converter. The new unit got a new control box also which had a changed shifting program to match the "Turbo Tip" to the lower powered Carrera's.

I 'm checking back to see how many shifting algorithms are in each...

On the M02 and newer - 250 shift maps. On the older ones - 5 shift maps.

Ouch! Kinda sucks huh?

Unhappy

Thanks for the insight, that really does suck. Well I guess I'm just stuck with the tranny (that or turbo cab time), I cant even imagine how obscenely expensive a swap would be.

out of curiosity drpaul, I saw on your profile that you have clear halogen headlights as opposed to the outdated amber ones. I have been thinking about doing this but can't justify the price of litronics. Where did you find these, and what price range are they if you don't mind me asking?

Ebay! $300 - They work great and are much cheaper...

I then sold my old ones on ebay too to help offset the price $150.

When it was all said and done the upgrade was only $150

I have an '03 tip and 250 maps or not, the thing is programmed to shift like a granny is driving it...

I would love to have a sportier shifting algorithm. The first thing I would want is for the car to always start in 1st gear. That is a real annoying feature of the Tip that it doesn't.
