Air Box Mod
The factory air box should have some holes in it already for drainage. Drilling more will help with that and perhaps give a little more throatier sound but nothing else as the factory air box already provides more than enough air for the engine.
I think the 993 cars had an option called the Motor Sound Package that included, among other things, an airbox with additional holes drilled in it. I'm sure you could do the same thing in a 996, but I wouldn't expect any additional power.
Or you could retrofit a sound symposer to it like is used on the 991 981 GTS. I have retro-fitted a few 996's and 997's with a remote switched sound symposer and they sound awesome .
I remember reading a years ago about the orange cap mod...not sure if its related to this. No idea what it was.

I think the "orange cap mod" would be referring to blocking off the Helmholtz resonator on the top of the air box and installing an "orange" cap on it. It does improve the intake sound in my opinion , but not near as much as the "sound symposer". The sound symposer actually amplifies the natural acoustics of the intake vibrations , while the Helmholtz resonator was designed to "muffle" the natural sound of the intake ! So blocking the Helmholtz resonator puts it back to natural , and "sound symposer" takes it a step further and amplifies natural.
For more noise and possibly better throttle response, pick up a K&N filter and get something like this:
