2003 996

I have a 2003 996 every once in a while the car will get stuck in 3rd gear and won't shift up or down. I will pull over turn the engine off and start it back up and it is like it never happened and goes back to shifting normal like it never happen. does anybody have any idea what his may be? I forgot to mention this is an automatic Tiptronic car.

Maybe the gear selector (or what ever it is called) unit inside the gearbox needs adjusting someway. I think that could be accessed via the inside of the car rather than dropping the gearbox. Get a good mechanic on it or DIY....

Greetings.
I would guess that the 3rd gear synchro is jamming. If so you will be dropping the transmission and doing some rebuilding soon.
How long have you been driving this car? Have you or perhaps a previous owner missed that shift from 2nd to 3rd? This is a recognized issue with the 996, and is a long-time Porsche principle. You can't power shift the car like a Corvette or other "muscle" car. The shifts must be smooth and fluid, especially in a 996 going from 2nd to 3rd.
Just my guess and some thoughts.
Good luck.

First off then I would completely change the transmission fluid. Doing that may solve your problem.

You might want to check this page out if changing the transmission fluid does not solve your problem. Seems like a daft question but have you changed a tire recently???? Check out this page. http://www.renntech.org/forums/topic...arbox-problem/

Probably not a fluid problem. You can change the fluid if you want. 62,000 kilometers isn't many miles, errr kilometers, so a fluid change is a bit premature but if I was going to do a fluid change I'd rather do it too soon rather than too late.

Be sure you have the fluid change done right. You do not want to create a problem where probably none existed before the fluid change.

More likely the problem is electrical. That the symptom is present until you turn the engine off then is gone when you turn it on again points to that. There is one and possibly more solenoids that are part of the Tip shift linkage and it reads like one is acting up.

as macster said.............. also have your tech check the electrical connector that is just to the right of the shift linkage, above the side tip short return drive shaft. (very easy to see from underneath) the connector is prone to getting road junk in it that effects the quality of the connections. have it cleaned with electrical component cleaner, make sure none of the pins are bent or sockets dirty or corroded. these have been know to cause intermitant issues on tip trans cars. good luck.
