996 to 991 conversion

Hi,

I am new to this forum and read quite a few threads related to this conversion.

My idea is to prepare a decent looking track car with gutted interior.

Anyone has any experience with this kit:-

I am going to look at a salvage title 996 decent running condition for about 7000$ this weekend and plan on putting this kit on.

My budget is 25k.

Most eBay listings use actual pictures of the car they are saying their body kit is for. Personally, I would go to their shop in person and ask for examples of their work. Be prepared to have a body shop adjust every single piece and be able to identify parts that are too far gone and need to have the body kit company remake...

I have a 996 track car, my first thought is: why would you want to spend all that money on the aesthetics of a tack car that is no doubt going to get banged up on a regular basis? for the 996, track components, body work, replacement parts, ect are widely available.

Plus you need to factor in all the accessories cost(hood, hinges, gas filler door/neck, headlights, taillights, fender liners, brake ducts, rear wing, radiator shroud, grills, wiring connectors, exhaust, etc)

Just these parts could amount to over $10k if bought OEM.

Then figure in min of $10k for body shop labor to fit, prep, finish these panels. They will also need to modify the fender liners, exhaust, wiring, etc to make it work.

Even after all that, you're car might still look like crap and disproportional.

Way too much risk IMO. The fact that the seller doesn't provide pics of actual fitted cars tells you something right there.

Hmmm... 996 - 997 conversion seems fairly difficult and labor intensive. I wouldn't want to wager on the difficulty of a 996 - 991 conversion. Seems to me like it would be a never ending series of adjustments and fabrications.

If you have the skills to do it yourself or find a good bodyshop, I say do it. IMO, the 996 look too small to convert to a 991. Esp the middle section. A 997 to 991 is more ideal. But if it were me & have a budget of $25K, I would find a wreck 991 for cheap instead. Otherwise at the end of the day after all said & done you're still driving a 996 no matter what it look like.

I don't think "opinion" has anything to do with it. The 991 is clearly a much larger car - making such a "conversion" a nightmare. 997 is pretty much the same size (at least much closer) as the 996 hence the ability to do a conversion...

At least please get a 02+ if you are listening to us. The lack of .2L & VarioCam+ in the 1999-2001 is really felt down low in RPM.

I don't understand any of this. A track car and cosmetic mods such as this are mutually exclusive. 25k gets you a nice 996 with money left over for safety and some go fast mods. Your money is much better spent on safety, tires and suspension.

Of course you're absolutely correct! Two separate purposes for sure...perhaps the OP question was more of a "narrow body (996) to wide body (991)" conversion...??? If this is the case, there are certainly wide-body type kits available that are geared toward the club racer.
