Muffler Question

This is probably a stupid question, but here goes anyway. Does anyone know what type of metal the 2003 C4S mufflers are made from?
Thanks

Dunno about that as I've seen many rusted ones. I would have to say aluminized.

If corrosion is a concern for the OP, the mufflers are double walled and I've never seen holes through one before on the actual case. You're likely to either have a spot weld on one of the internal baffles fail first or on one of the pinch welds. The pinch weld section on the case is the weakest point on the exterior since it's not double walled like the rest.

Thanks for the responses. My reason for asking is that I may end up modifying them and wanted to know what kind of metal they were when welding them. I thought stainless steel, but if you've seen rusted ones then that makes me wonder.

I am not a expert welder but the skin on a muffler for 996 is two very thin layers of metal, the inner layer is almost like heavy duty aluminum foil.I own and use a arc welder{I know old school but works very well} at home there would be no way you could use it on these mufflers. Not sure if other types of welders would work .I am sure the arc welder would burn right through the skin. I have seen these cut open and there isn't much to it three chambers with perforated plates or baffles inside separating the chambers.I would be cautious if you are going to open it up ,you may not be able to weld it without leaks.

Contact Cargraphic they do alter the stock mufflers and weld a patch panel back.

http://www.thefabricator.com/article...uminized-steel

MIG Welding the aluminized steel is not so complicated, just need to have the correct wire and gas as described in above article and elsewhere. The problem as I have seen it is that usually when you go to repair one of these items (muffler or tailpipe), the metal is already corroded and ablated and very thin and you wind up blowing holes in what metal is left. If the muffler were new, it would be readily doable.
