Appx. price to fix throw out bearing

First things first, Happy New Years to all of you!

Second, I believe I am in need of a new throw out bearing on my '02 996. The problem I am encountering after driving for 20-30 minutes occurs when I shift into and out of gears. It is most easily heard in/out of first because of the limited noise from surroundings.

The noise I am hearing is similar to a squeak, but also similar to the sound a cable makes when it is stretched out too much. My guess is that the throw out bearing needs replaced, but you all probably are a lot better at identifying problems like me.

If this is the throw out bearing, what would the approximate cost to replace be? Any help would be great. Thanks!

If it is the throwout bearing, it would make noise whenever you depressed the clutch pedal, whether you are in gear or not, moving or not. Start the car and put it in neutral. Release the clutch and then slowly depress the clutch pedal. If you have a bad throwout bearing, you should begin to hear it as the pedal goes towards the floor.

If it is a squal you hear it might be the bushing on the pedal which you should be able to recreate when the car is off and getting your head down by the clutch pedal. As 1999 said above about the frequency of noise of a TO bearing is correct. If it does need the bearing replaced they will have to pull the engine/trans out to replace it and they will probably (should) replace the clutch as well.
